1 Corinthians 10:3

1 Corinthians 10:3
And did all eat the same spiritual meat;

a. NLT: All of them ate the same spiritual food,

b. NIV: They all ate the same spiritual food

c. YLT: and all the same spiritual food did eat,

d. Amplified Bible Classic: And all [of them] ate the same spiritual (supernaturally given) food,

e. Worrell Translation: And all ate the same spiritual food.

f. Wuest Translation: And all ate the same spiritual food.

1. “And did all eat the same spiritual meat;”

a. And [Strong: 2532. kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. did…eat [Strong: 5315. phago fag'-o a primary verb (used as an alternate of 2068 in certain tenses); to eat (literally or figuratively):--eat, meat.]

c. all [Strong: 3956. pas pas including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole:--all (manner of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.]

d. the same [Strong: 846. autos ow-tos' from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

e. spiritual [Strong: 4152. pneumatikos pnyoo-mat-ik-os' from 4151; non-carnal, i.e. (humanly) ethereal (as opposed to gross), or (daemoniacally) a spirit (concretely), or (divinely) supernatural, regenerate, religious:--spiritual.]

1). David H. Stern, Jewish New Testament Commentary, p. 469. “I believe its meaning here is “pertaining to the Holy Spirit” (Hebrew Ruach HaKodesh), but in this context it could also mean “spiritual” in the sense of either “supernatural” or “conveying spiritual substance.”

f. meat [Strong: 1033. broma bro'-mah from the base of 977; food (literally or figuratively), especially (ceremonially) articles allowed or forbidden by the Jewish law:--meat, victuals.]

1). This is referring to the giving of manna to the Israelites after the exodus from Egypt. The whole chapter of Exodus 16 is about the initial giving of the manna and the giving of the quail. The quail were not spiritual they were natural, so the “spiritual meat” is not referring to the quail but the manna. It is referenced in Psalms.

a). Psalm 78:24, 25 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.
78:25 Man did eat angel’s food: he sent them meat to the full.

2). Jesus said that the manna was a type or foreshadow of himself.

a). John 6:31-33  Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
6:32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
6:33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

b). John 6:47-51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
6:48 I am that bread of life.
6:49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
6:50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

3). Paul writes “all ate the same spiritual meat”. Whatever spiritual, supernatural, and physical sustenance received from manna, they all were given it. There is another reference to manna in Revelation.

a). Revelation 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
