Titus 1:7


For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

1. “For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God…”

The word does not include the responsible and temperate usage of alcohol, rather, it has in view the abuse or incessant use of it. The word picture is that of an individual who always has a bottle (or wineskin) on the table and so signifies addiction.] [Thayer: given to wine, drunken: others give it the secondary sense, 'quarrelsome over wine'; hence, brawling, abusive).]


1). It is clear that drinking alcohol is permissible under the New Covenant, but too much wine is sin. 


a). 1 Peter 4:3  For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

Titus 2:11-15

Titus 2:11
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
a. NLT:  For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people.
b. NIV: For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.
c. Young’s Literal Translation: For the saving grace of God was manifested to all men,

1. “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation…”
a. For [1063 * gar] [Strong: a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]
b. the grace [5485 * charis] [Strong: from 5463; graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act (abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude):--acceptable, benefit, favour, gift, grace(- ious), joy, liberality, pleasure, thank(-s, -worthy).]
1). The grace of God to man encompasses not only the absolute free offer of redemption/salvation through Jesus Christ but also all the benefits that go with it. The use of these terms in this verse and especially in the next verse demonstrate this clearly.
c. of God [2316 * theos] [Strong:  of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]
d. that bringeth salvation [4992 * soterios] [Zodhiates: Delivering, saving, bringing salvation. When Simeon took the baby Jesus in his arms, he realized that Jesus was the means of salvation and said that his eyes had seen… thy salvation (Luke 2:30). In Luke 3:6, when John the Baptist cited Isaiah’s prophecy, “And all flesh shall see the salvation of God,…he referred to the Lord Jesus Christ who was the means of the salvation that God was going to bring about.] [Strong: neuter of the same as 4991 as (properly, concretely) noun; defender or (by implication) defence:--salvation.]
1). The following definition is actually under the Greek word “soteria” [Strong’s number 4991] but it still encompasses what is in the whole Biblical idea of salvation. Scofield Reference Bible: “The Hebrew and Greek words for salvation imply the ideas of deliverance, safety, preservation, healing and soundness. Salvation is the great inclusive word of the Gospel, gathering into itself all the redemptive acts and processes…”
2). The sum within these terms: grace brings deliverance, safety, preservation, healing and soundness, and we as Romans 5:2 declares “have access by faith into this grace.”
2. “…hath appeared to all men.”
a. hath appeared [2014 * epiphaino] [Zodhiates: to show forth, exhibit, shine light upon.] [Strong’s: to become clearly known, to show one's self, become visible.] [Strong: from 1909 and 5316; to shine upon, i.e. become (literally) visible or (figuratively) known:--appear, give light.]
b. to all [Strong: 3956 * pas pas including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole:--all (manner of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.]
c. men [Strong: 444 * anthropos anth'-ro-pos from 435 and ops (the countenance; from 3700); man-faced, i.e. a human being:--certain, man.]
1). This is shown not only with the initial commandment of God but also within His use of us as His instruments to live out and proclaim it to the world around us.
a). Romans 16:25, 26 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,
16:26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:
b). 2 Corinthians 4:5, 6 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.
4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Titus 2:12
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
a. NLT: And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God,
b. NIV: It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,
c. Young’s Literal Translation: teaching us, that denying the impiety and the worldly desires, soberly and righteously and piously we may live in the present age,
d. Amplified Bible: It has trained us to reject and renounce all ungodliness (irreligion) and worldly (passionate) desires, to live discreet (temperate, self-controlled), upright, devout (spiritually whole) lives in this present world,
e. Worrell Translation: Teaching us, that, denying ungodliness and worldly desires, we should live soberly, and righteously, and godly in the present age;
1. “Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts…”
a. teaching [3811* paideuo] [Zodhiates: Oringinally to bring up a child, to educate, used of activity directed toward the moral and spiritual nurture and training of the child, to influence conscious will and action. To instruct, correct, chastise.]
b. us [Strong: 2248 * hemas hay-mas' accusative case plural of 1473; us:--our, us, we.]
c. that [Strong: 2443 * hina hin'-ah probably from the same as the former part of 1438 (through the demonstrative idea; compare 3588); in order that (denoting the purpose or the result):--albeit, because, to the intent (that), lest, so as, (so) that, (for) to.]
d. denying [720 * arneomai] [Zodhiates: To deny, refuse, reject, decline, give up ]
e. ungodliness [763 * asebeia] [Zodhiates: impious, ungodly, wicked, lack of reverence,  wickedness in general, neglect or violation of duty toward God, our neighbor or ourselves.]
f. and [Strong: 2532 * kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
g. worldly [2886 * kosmikos] [Zodhiates: Worldly, what belongs to the world, the opposite of heavenly or spiritual. In Titus 2:12 “worldly lusts” pertain to those desire of the world which estrange a person from God.]
h. lusts [Strong: 1939 * epithumia ep-ee-thoo-mee'-ah from 1937; a longing (especially for what is forbidden):--concupiscence, desire, lust (after).]
1). From the above definitions we can clearly see that the belief that grace is mostly just the “initial justification forgiveness at coming to Christ and forgiveness and restoration when we sin” is not the whole truth. As we saw in Titus 2:11 the Hebrew and Greek words for salvation consists of deliverance, safety, preservation, healing and soundness. Grace not only instructs us to “deny, reject, give up and refuse ungodly and worldly lusts”, it also gives us the power and ability to do so.
a). Matthew 5:27-30 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
b). Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
c). Galatians 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
2). Scripture is clear, we can “receive the grace of God in vain” [2 Corinthians 6:1], or “fail of the grace of God” [Hebrews 12:15]. The word “fail” is [hystereo * 5302] and it means “fail to reach the goal, fail to become a partaker, to be left behind, to fall short of the end.”
a). 2 Corinthians 6:1 We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.
b). Hebrews 12:15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
3). In his conclusion of the exhortation to the Corinthian church about receiving “the grace of God in vain”, Paul did not mince words about our responsibility as believers.
a). 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
6:15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
6:16 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
6:17 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

1). The “blessed hope” and the “glorious appearing” are one in the same event. This is shown by the combining of the two different terms in 1 John.
a). 1 John 3:2, 3 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
2). Looking forward in faith and the future hope of the second coming of Christ will produce a desire to live a more holy life.
a). 1 John 3:2, 3 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

1). Christ Jesus gave himself for us because of his great love for us. The amount of passages that could be cited here are many, but for time and space the following will be enough.
a). Galatians 1:4  Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
b). Philippians 2:7, 8 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

2. “…that he might redeem us from all iniquity…”

1). Rick Renner 2/2/16 This is the word used in Titus 2:14, where Paul says, “…That he might redeem us from all iniquity….” This Greek word depicts a person who paid a very high price to obtain the slave of his choice. Once the price was offered and accepted, that slave became his personal property. However, the word lutroo was used in another very significant way that also has to do with the concept of redemption. At times, a caring and compassionate individual would come to the slave market for the sole purpose of purchasing slaves out of slavery to liberate and set them free! In this case, the payment offered was viewed as a ransom — paid to obtain freedom for slaves. Because Paul uses the word lutroo to denote the redemptive work of Jesus Christ on our behalf, it tells us several important things: Jesus came into the world, Satan’s slave market, because He was looking for us. Jesus knew He wanted us and wouldn’t be satisfied until the purchase was complete. Jesus was willing to pay any price demanded to purchase us from the slave market. Jesus purchased us with His own blood so we would become His own personal property. Jesus paid the price with His blood, purchased us for Himself, and gave us a liberating freedom that can only be known because of His work in our lives!
Our freedom from Satan’s power was extremely expensive. The price Jesus paid for us was the highest price ever paid for a slave. What was the ransom that Jesus paid in order to procure our freedom from Satan’s ownership? His own blood!
2). Our redemption in Christ Jesus involves not only being forgiven for our sins but also deliverance from them. One of more than a few verses that reveal this truth is found in Acts. The Greek definition of the word “justified” from this vers is powerful.
a). Acts 13:38, 39 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:
13:39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
b). justified [1344 * dikaioo] [Zodhiates: it is used with the preposition ‘apo’-from, referring to all those things from which the Mosaic Law could not liberate us.
