b. NIV: Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’

c. YLT: to kill me dost thou wish, as thou didst kill yesterday the Egyptian?

1). It is seen here that at age forty Moses knew that he was going to be the individual that God would use to deliver Israel from Egypt. It is probable that this God inspired realization was what prompted his to visit his brethren as Acts7:23 relates. At any rate this is a powerful moment in Moses life even though not only did his people not realize it, but the events did not happen for forty more years. There is a number of revelations Moses was receiving at this moment in his life, but did not realize they had to be matured in his heart.

a).  Hebrews 11:24-26 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;
11:25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
11:26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

2). These spiritual principles that encompass the Old and New Testaments were growing in his heart.

a). Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

b). 1 John 2:15-17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

h. the children [5207 * huios] [Strong: apparently a primary word; a "son" (sometimes of animals), used very widely of immediate, remote or figuratively, kinship:--child, foal, son.]

i. of Israel [2474 * Israel] [Strong: of Hebrew origin (3478); Israel (i.e. Jisrael), the adopted name of Jacob, including his descendants (literally or figuratively):--Israel.]

1). There is a passage in Hebrews that surely fits in this time period of Moses life.

a). Hebrews 11:24-26 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;
11:25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
11:26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

2). The phrase “refused to be called” definitely is strong language and declares that Moses wanted nothing to do with Egyptian identity. This refusal occurred when Moses had grown up in every way. Here we see Moses at age forty identifying with being a Jew, not only in the Old Testament but also in the New. There is Rabbinic teaching in Jewish tradition that complements these verses. “Moses had been raised in the splendor and anti-Semitism of the palace, but he remained the son of Amram and Jochebed. Though his mother had had him for only the earliest years of his life, she succeeded so well in imbuing him with love of and loyalty to his people, that despit his royal upbringing, he did not become an Egyptian prince, but remained a Jew. As he matured, he displayed the compassion for the downtrodden that stamped him as the future redeemer of Israel.” Chumash, p. 298, Note for verses 11-15.

Acts 7:22

Acts 7:22

And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

a. NLT: Moses was taught all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was powerful in both speech and action.

1. “And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians…”

a.  And [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

f. Of the Egyptians [124 * Aiguptios] [Strong: from 125; an Ægyptian or inhabitant of Ægyptus:--Egyptian.]

1). In his Old Testament Through the Bible Series, Gordon Lindsay writes in Volume 9,
“The wisdom of the Egyptians included knowledge of the sciences, much of which was afterwards lost until comparatively recent times. Writing (hieroglyphics), arithmetic, and geometry were known. Surveying was a well developed and necessary art, since the annual inundations of the Nile obliterated all boundary marks. Engineering had reached a high state of efficiency. The Great Pyramid reveals an amazing knowledge of its builders in the science of astronomy, geometry, and agriculture. As for astronomy, the Egyptians used a year of 365 days, and employed ingenious means to keep the calendar in step with the seasons. These people also had considerable knowledge of chemistry. The present state of preservation of their mummies attests to a remarkable proficiency in the embalming art. The Egyptians mined and worked such metals as iron and copper. A variety of musical instruments had been developed, and music held a prominent place in Egyptian worship.”

2. “…and was mighty in words and in deeds.”

a. and [1161 * de] [Strong: a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

e. words [3056 * logos] [Strong: a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]

f. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

g. in [1722 * en] See “in” above.

h. deeds [2041 * ergon] [Strong: from a primary (but obsolete) ergo (to work); toil (as an effort or occupation); by implication, an act:--deed, doing, labour, work.

1). Josephus also writes that Moses was appointed to be the leader of the Egyptian military in order to rescue the nation from the invasion of the Ethiopians. Josephus, Book II, Chapter 10, Paragraph 1 & 2. Though Scripture does not back up this account, it is possible that these deeds or some similar were the ones spoken on in Acts 7:22, in speaking that Moses “was mighty in words and deeds.”

Exodus 1:16

Exodus 1:16

And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.

b. NIV: “When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.”

c. YLT: and saith, 'When ye cause the Hebrew women to bear, and have looked on the children; if it is a son -- then ye have put him to death; and if it is a daughter -- then she hath lived.'

[And he] said [559 * ‘amar] [Strong: a primitive root; to say (used with great latitude):--answer, appoint, avouch, bid, boast self, call, certify, challenge, charge, + (at the, give) command(-ment), commune, consider, declare, demand, X desire, determine, X expressly, X indeed, X intend, name, X plainly, promise, publish, report, require, say, speak (against, of), X still, X suppose, talk, tell, term, X that is, X think, use (speech), utter, X verily, X yet.]

c. [be a] son [1121 * ben] [Strong: from 1129; a son (as a builder of the family name), in the widest sense (of literal and figurative relationship, including grandson, subject, nation, quality or condition, etc., (like 1, 251, etc.)):--+ afflicted, age, (Ahoh-) (Ammon-) (Hachmon-) (Lev-)ite, (anoint-)ed one, appointed to, (+) arrow, (Assyr-) (Babylon-) (Egypt-) (Grec-)ian, one born, bough, branch, breed, + (young) bullock, + (young) calf, X came up in, child, colt, X common, X corn, daughter, X of first, + firstborn, foal, + very fruitful, + postage, X in, + kid, + lamb, (+) man, meet, + mighty, + nephew, old, (+) people, + rebel, + robber, X servant born, X soldier, son, + spark, + steward, + stranger, X surely, them of, + tumultuous one, + valiant(-est), whelp, worthy, young (one), youth.]

20:15 Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad.
20:16 And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noontide;
20:17  Because he slew me not from the womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb to be always great with me.”

b). Job 3:11 Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?

2). These two verses show that whether in the womb or out of the womb, if an infant’s live is purposely ended, they have been “killed” or “slain.” In Job case he is lamenting his circumstances, clearly regards the end of his live in his mother’s womb as a “death”.
