Numbers 13:26-29
And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to
all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran,
to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and
shewed them the fruit of the land.
And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither
thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the
fruit of it.
Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land,
and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of
Anak there.
The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the
Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the
Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.
a. As the spies began to give a full report to Moses and
Aaron, it did not take long for the unbelief to begin to surface from their
unbelieving hearts. Yes the land is full of goodness, but, there are giants in
the land, the cities are very great and walled. They then mention five of the
seven nations they are to dispossess.
b. The Bible warns against unbelief in any form it takes. In
the case of the ten spies it was fear and failure to believe what God said.
They believed in God, they just didn’t believe what he said.
1).
Jude 5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how
that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward
destroyed them that believed not.
c. An unbelieving heart is an evil heart.
1).
Hebrews 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of
unbelief, in departing from the living God.
d. The Apostle Paul exhorts us to take God’s word over the
word of man. Once God has spoken on a matter, if a man or group of men and
women dispute what God has already spoken on a matter we are to consider those
who dispute what God has said as liars.
1).
Romans 3:3, 4 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the
faith of God without effect?
God
forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou
mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art
judged.
