Isaiah 60:5
Then thou
shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged;
because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of
the Gentiles shall come unto thee.
a.
NLT: Your eyes will shine, and your heart will thrill with joy, for merchants
from around the world will come to you. They will bring you the wealth of many
lands.
b.
NIV: Then you will look and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with
joy; the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the
nations will come.
c.
Amplified Bible: Then you shall see and be radiant, and your heart shall
thrill and tremble with joy [at the glorious deliverance] and
be enlarged; because the abundant wealth of the [Dead] Sea shall be turned to
you, unto you shall the nations come with their treasures.
1).
Note in the Amplified Bible: Prior to well into the twentieth century, scholars
could only speculate as to what Isaiah might have meant here by “the abundant
wealth of the [Dead] Sea” that would one day be turned over to Jerusalem. Of
course, the Dead Sea, which for ages had been considered only a place of death
and desolation, was ruled out as a possible meaning. Then suddenly it was
discovered that the waters of the Dead Sea contain important chemicals.
In a.d.1935 G.T.B. Davis wrote, “One is almost staggered by the computed
wealth of the chemical salts of the Dead Sea. It is estimated that the
potential value of the potash, bromine, and other chemical salts of its waters
is... four times the wealth of the United States!” (G.T.B. Davis,Rebuilding
Palestine) Isaiah himself did not know this, but the God who caused the
Dead Sea to play a part in His program in the last days knew all about it, and
He led the prophet to so prophesy here in this verse.
d.
Septuagint: Then shalt thou see, and fear, and be amazed in thine heart; for
the wealth of the sea shall come round to thee, and of nations and peoples; and
herds of camels shall come to thee,

Stone Edition Torah/Writings/Prophets: Then you will see and be radiant, your
heart will be startled and broadened, for the affluence of the West will be
turned over to you, and the wealth of nations will come to you.
1. “Then
thou shalt see, and flow together…”
a.
Then [227 * 'az] [Strong: a demonstrative adverb; at that time or place; also
as a conjunction, therefore:--beginning, for, from, hitherto, now, of old,
once, since, then, at which time, yet.]
b.
thou shalt see [This phrase is made up of two Hebrew words, #7200 & #3372]
[7200
* ra’ah] [Strong: a primitive root; to see, literally or figuratively (in
numerous applications, direct and implied, transitive, intransitive and
causative):--advise self, appear, approve, behold, X certainly, consider,

joyfully, lo, look (on, one another, one on another, one upon another, out, up,
upon), mark, meet, X be near, perceive, present, provide, regard, (have)
respect, (fore-, cause to, let) see(-r, -m, one another), shew (self), X sight
of others, (e-)spy, stare, X surely, X think, view, visions.] [3372 * yare’]
[Strong: a primitive root; to fear; morally, to revere; caus. to
frighten:--affright, be (make) afraid, dread(-ful), (put in) fear(-ful, -fully,
-ing), (be had in) reverence(-end), X see, terrible (act, -ness, thing).]
b.
flow together [5102 * nahar] [Strong: a primitive root; to sparkle, i.e.
(figuratively) be cheerful; hence (from the sheen of a running stream) to flow,
i.e. (figuratively) assemble:--flow (together), be lightened.]
c.
and flow together [5102 * nahar] [Strong: a primitive root; to sparkle, i.e.
(figuratively) be cheerful; hence (from the sheen of a running stream) to flow,
i.e. (figuratively) assemble:--flow (together), be lightened.]
2. “…and
thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged…”
c.
thine heart [3824 * lebab] [Strong: from 3823; the heart (as the most
interior organ); used also like 3820:--+ bethink themselves, breast,
comfortably, courage, ((faint), (tender-)heart((-ed)), midst, mind, X unawares,
understanding.]
d.
shall fear [6342 * pachad] [Strong: a primitive root; to be startled (by a sudden
alarm); hence, to fear in general:--be afraid, stand in awe, (be in) fear, make
to shake.]
e.
and be enlarged [7337 * rachab] [Strong: a primitive root; to broaden
(intransitive or transitive, literal or figurative):--be an en-(make)
large(-ing), make room, make (open) wide.]
3. “…because the abundance of the sea shall be
converted unto thee…”
a.
because [3588 * kiy] [Strong: a primitive particle (the full form of the
prepositional prefix) indicating causal relations of all kinds, antecedent or
consequent; (by implication) very widely used as a relative conjunction or
adverb (as below); often largely modified by other particles annexed:--and, +
(forasmuch, inasmuch, where-)as, assured(-ly), + but, certainly, doubtless, +
else, even, + except, for, how, (because, in, so, than) that, + nevertheless,
now, rightly, seeing, since, surely, then, therefore, + (al- )though, + till,
truly, + until, when, whether, while, whom, yea, yet.]
b.
the abundance [1995 * hamown] [Strong: from 1993; a noise, tumult, crowd;
also disquietude, wealth:--abundance, company, many, multitude, multiply,
noise, riches, rumbling, sounding, store, tumult.]
c.
the sea [3220 * yam] [Strong: from an unused root meaning to roar; a sea (as
breaking in noisy surf) or large body of water; specifically (with the
article), the Mediterranean Sea; sometimes a large river, or an artifical
basin; locally, the west, or (rarely) the south:--sea (X -faring man,
(-shore)), south, west (-ern, side, -ward).]
d.
shall be converted [2015 * haphak] [Strong: a primitive root; to turn about or
over; by implication, to change, overturn, return, pervert:--X become, change,
come, be converted, give, make (a bed), overthrow (-turn), perverse, retire,
tumble, turn (again, aside, back, to the contrary, every way).]
1).
The Amplified Bible translates this as being the Dead Sea and gives a very
interesting note concerning it (see above), but Strong’s (above), gives one of
the possible meanings as the Mediterranean. Whatever sea is in mind, all of the
seas and oceans contain wealth that has been barely touched and will be mined
during the millennial reign of Christ. The following verses though not
referring to the millennial reign specifically really covers the possibility of
different ages mining the wealth of the seas.
2).
Deuteronomy 33:19 They shall call the people unto the mountain; there they
shall offer sacrifices of righteousness: for they shall suck of the abundance of the seas,
and of treasures hid
in the sand.
e.
to you [5921 * `al] [Strong: properly, the same as 5920 used as a
preposition (in the singular or plural often with prefix, or as conjunction
with a particle following); above, over, upon, or against (yet always in this
last relation with a downward aspect) in a great variety of applications (as
follow):--above, according to(-ly), after, (as) against, among, and, X as, at,
because of, beside (the rest of), between, beyond the time, X both and, by
(reason of), X had the charge of, concerning for, in (that), (forth, out) of,
(from) (off), (up-)on, over, than, through(-out), to, touching, X with.]
4. “…the
forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.”
a.
the forces [[2428 * chayil][Strong: probably a force, whether of men, means or
other resources; an army, wealth, virtue, valor, strength:--able, activity, (+)
army, band of men (soldiers), company, (great) forces, goods, host, might,
power, riches, strength, strong, substance, train, (+)valiant(-ly), valour,
virtuous(-ly), war, worthy(-ily).]
b.
of the Gentiles [1471 * gowy] [Strong: apparently from the same root as 1465 (in
the sense of massing); a foreign nation; hence, a Gentile; also (figuratively)
a troop of animals, or a flight of locusts:--Gentile, heathen, nation, people.]
c.
shall come to you [935 * bow’] [Strong: a primitive root; to go or come (in a
wide variety of applications):--abide, apply, attain, X be, befall, + besiege,
bring (forth, in, into, to pass), call, carry, X certainly, (cause, let, thing
for) to come (against, in, out, upon, to pass), depart, X doubtless again, +
eat, + employ, (cause to) enter (in, into, -tering, -trance, -try), be fallen,
fetch, + follow, get, give, go (down, in, to war), grant, + have, X indeed,
(in-)vade, lead, lift (up), mention, pull in, put, resort, run (down), send,
set, X (well) stricken (in age), X surely, take (in), way.]
1).
Here is says the wealth of the nations will be brought to Israel, to Jerusalem
in particular. As Isaiah 60 flows, the wealth brought to Jerusalem is the
highlight, but other developments of the millennial reign of Christ are also
revealed. The rebuilding of Jerusalem by the Gentiles nations, coupled with
their absolute submission to Israel as the exalted nation. Notice the
comparison of the following two passages from Isaiah 60 and Revelation 21. It
is from these two passages within their proper context that places the verses
in the millennial reign of Christ, not before. There will be a constant flow of
wealth into New Jerusalem, but it will come after the return of Christ.
