Ezekiel 16:26

Ezekiel 16:26

Thou hast also committed fornication with the Egyptians thy neighbours, great of flesh; and hast increased thy whoredoms, to provoke me to anger.

a. NLT: Then you added lustful Egypt to your lovers, provoking my anger with your increasing promiscuity.

b. NIV: You engaged in prostitution with the Egyptians, your neighbors with large genitals, and aroused my anger with your increasing promiscuity.

c. Amplified Bible: You have also played the harlot with the Egyptians, your neighbors, [by adopting their idolatries] whose worship is thoroughly sensuous, and you have multiplied your harlotry to provoke Me to anger.

d. Septuagint: And thou didst go a-whoring after the children of Egypt thy neighbors, great of flesh; and didst go a-whoring, often to provoke me to anger.

e. Stone Edition Torah/Writings/Prophets: You were licentious with the sons of Egypt, your neighbors, great of flesh; and you multiplied your harlotry to provoke me.

1. “Thou hast also committed fornication with the Egyptians thy neighbours, great of flesh…”

a. [Thou hast also] committed fornication [Strong: 2181 zânâh, zaw-naw'; a primitive root [highly fed and therefore wanton]; to commit adultery (usually of the female, and less often of simple fornication, rarely of involuntary ravishment); figuratively, to commit idolatry (the Jewish people being regarded as the spouse of Jehovah):—(cause to) commit fornication, × continually, × great, (be an, play the) harlot, (cause to be, play the) whore, (commit, fall to) whoredom, (cause to) go a-whoring, whorish.]

b. with [Strong: 413 'el ale (but only used in the shortened constructive form sel {el}); a primitive particle; properly, denoting motion towards, but occasionally used of a quiescent position, i.e. near, with or among; often in general, to:--about, according to ,after, against, among, as for, at, because(-fore, -side), both...and, by, concerning, for, from, X hath, in(- to), near, (out) of, over, through, to(-ward), under, unto, upon, whether, with(-in).]

g. [of] flesh [Strong: 1320 basar baw-sawr' from 1319; flesh (from its freshness); by extension, body, person; also (by euphem.) the pudenda of a man:--body, (fat, lean) flesh(-ed), kin, (man-)kind, + nakedness, self, skin.] [Gesenius: flesh, of the body, of humans, of animals, the body itself, male organ of generation (euphemism), kindred, blood-relations, flesh as frail or erring (man against God), all living things, animals, mankind.]

2). Commentary Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsh: bâzâr, a euphemism. Compare Ezekiel 23:20.

a). Ezekiel 23:20 For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses.

b). NLT: She lusted after lovers with genitals as large as a donkey’s and emissions like those of a horse.

c). NIV: There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses.

2. “…and hast increased thy whoredoms, to provoke me to anger.”
