Revelation 22:9


Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.

1. “Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not…”


a. Then [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]


b. saith he [Strong: 3004 lego leg'-o a primary verb; properly, to "lay" forth, i.e. (figuratively) relate (in words (usually of systematic or set discourse; whereas 2036 and 5346 generally refer to an individual expression or speech respectively; while 4483 is properly to break silence merely, and 2980 means an extended or random harangue)); by implication, to mean:--ask, bid, boast, call, describe, give out, name, put forth, say(-ing, on), shew, speak, tell, utter.]

2. “…for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets…”


a. for [Strong: 1063 gar gar a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]

c. thy [Strong: 4675 sou soo genitive case of 4771; of thee, thy:--X home, thee, thine (own), thou, thy.]


d. fellowservant [Strong: 4889 sundoulos soon'-doo-los from 4862 and 1401; a co-slave, i.e. servitor or ministrant of the same master (human or divine):--fellowservant.]

h. the [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]


i. prophets [Strong: 4396 prophetes prof-ay'-tace from a compound of 4253 and 5346; a foreteller ("prophet"); by analogy, an inspired speaker; by extension, a poet:--prophet.]


1). This “angel” was a prophet probably one of the Old Testament prophets that God was using to dispense His judgments upon a Christ denying world. This angel had previously told John that he had been sent by the “Lord God of the holy prophets”.


a). Revelation 22:6 And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.


2). This angel is one of the seven angels that we saw in Revelation 15:1 that have the seven last plagues. They appear in Revelation 16:1-17, Revelation 17, Revelation 21 and Revelation 22.


3). P.R.: This leads to a peculiar conjecture, that perhaps the angel who is speaking to John is Daniel. In the resurrection, the saints are “as the angels” (Matther 22:30), and the angel who has shown all this to John, has shown it to him in the past tense. (Remember, John has been caught up to the “the day of the LORD,” into the future, and of course, Daniel has been dead for many years and had gone on to glory.) Daniel has a “little (?) book,” which he was told to “seal the book, even to the time of the end” (Daniel 12:4), and yet in Revelation 22:10--”And he [the angel] saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of THIS book: for the time is at hand.”  Since we know that the study of Daniel and Revelation go together, there is a possibility that “the angel” is Daniel, but this cannot be proven.


4). 10). These seven “angels” were in reality seven redeemed men, probably Old Testament prophets who were given the honor of dispensing the wrath of God on a world that had rejected God. This school of thought lines up with the rest of Scripture as to the responsibilities of redeemed men and women. I am not saying that redeemed men and women become angels, such thinking is hogwash. Men and angels are two different creations, each occupying a distinct place in God’s overall creation. What I am saying is these were redeemed men, probably Old Testament prophets who were chosen by God to dispense His wrath upon the nations and John identified them as “messengers”. Again, this lines up with the rest of Scripture as to the future rewards and responsibilities given to men and women who were faithful during their lives on earth.


a).  1 Corinthians 6:2, 3 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? 

6:3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?


b). Revelation 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.


c). Luke 19:11-27 And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.

19:12 He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.

19:13 And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.

19:14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.

19:15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.

19:16 Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.

19:17And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.

22:18 And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.

22:19 And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.

22:20 And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:

22:21 For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.

22:22 And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:

22:23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?

22:24 And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.

22:25 (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)

22:26 For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.

22:27 But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.


3. “…and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.”

c. which keep [Strong: 5083 tereo tay-reh'-o from teros (a watch; perhaps akin to 2334); to guard (from loss or injury, properly, by keeping the eye upon; and thus differing from 5442, which is properly to prevent escaping; and from 2892, which implies a fortress or full military lines of apparatus), i.e. to note (a prophecy; figuratively, to fulfil a command); by implication, to detain (in custody; figuratively, to maintain); by extension, to withhold (for personal ends; figuratively, to keep unmarried); by extension, to withhold (for personal ends; figuratively, to keep unmarried):--hold fast, keep(- er), (pre-, re-)serve, watch.]
