Hebrews 6:6
If
they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify
to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
a. NLT: And who then turn away from
God. It is impossible to bring such people back to repentance; by rejecting the
Son of God, they themselves are nailing him to the cross once again and holding
him up to public shame.
b. NIV: And who have fallen away,
to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of
God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.
c. YLT: And having fallen away, again to
renew them to reformation, having crucified again to themselves the Son
of God, and exposed to public shame.
d. Amplified Bible Classic: If they
then deviate from the faith and turn away from their allegiance—[it is
impossible] to bring them back to repentance, for (because, while, as long as)
they nail upon the cross the Son of God afresh [as far as they are concerned]
and are holding [Him] up to contempt and shame and public
disgrace.
e. Worrell Translation: And then fell
away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since theyare
crucifying to themselves the Son of Godafresh, and putting Him to open shame.
f. Wuest Translation: And have
fallen away, again to be renewing them to repentance, crucifying to themselves
the Son of God and putting Him to an open shame.
1.
“If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance…”
a. If [Strong: 2532 kai kahee
apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a
cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection
(or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but,
even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
b. they shall fall away [3895 parapipto
par-ap-ip'-to from 3844 and 4098; to fall aside, i.e. (figuratively) to
apostatize:--fall away.]
c. to renew them [Strong: 340 anakainizo
an-ak-ahee-nid'-zo from 303 and a derivative of 2537; to
restore:--renew.]
d. again [Strong: 3825 palin
pal'-in probably from the same as 3823 (through the idea of oscillatory
repetition); (adverbially) anew, i.e. (of place) back, (of time) once more, or
(conjunctionally) furthermore or on the other hand:--again.]
e. unto [Strong: 1519 eis ice
a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of
place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial
phrases:--(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by,
concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, +
forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one
mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that,
therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to),
...ward, (where-)fore, with. Often used in composition with the same general
import, but only with verbs (etc.) expressing motion (literally or
figuratively).]
f. repentance [Strong: 3341 metanoia
met-an'-oy-ah from 3340; (subjectively) compunction (for guilt,
including reformation); by implication, reversal (of (another's)
decision):--repentance.]
1). The phrase “to renew them again
unto repentance” clearly means they were at one time repentant. Maybe it is my
ignorance of Greek grammar that feeds my amazement of the mental and grammar
gymnastics scholars go to say these people were not true believers. I think the
wording of Hebrews 6:4-6 clearly implies these were believers.

“…seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an
open shame.”
a. seeing they crucify…afresh [Strong:
388 anastauroo an-as-tow-ro'-o from 303 and 4717; to recrucify
(figuratively):--crucify afresh.]
b. to themselves [Strong: 1438 heautou
heh-ow-too' from a reflexive pronoun otherwise obsolete and the genitive
case (dative case or accusative case) of 846; him- (her-, it-, them-, also (in
conjunction with the personal pronoun of the other persons) my-, thy-, our-,
your-) self (selves), etc.:--alone, her (own, -self), (he) himself, his (own),
itself, one (to) another, our (thine) own(-selves), + that she had, their (own,
own selves), (of) them(-selves), they, thyself, you, your (own, own conceits,
own selves, -selves).]
c. the Son [Strong: 5207 huios
hwee-os' apparently a primary word; a "son" (sometimes of
animals), used very widely of immediate, remote or figuratively,
kinship:--child, foal, son.]
d. of God [Strong: 2316 theos
theh'-os of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the
supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding,
God, god(-ly, -ward).]
e. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee
apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a
cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection
(or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but,
even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
f. put him to an open shame
[Strong: 3856 paradeigmatizo par-ad-igue-mat-id'-zo from 3844 and
1165; to show alongside (the public), i.e. expose to infamy:--make a public
example, put to an open shame.]
