1). The
general meaning is just as in Noah’s day and Lot’s day, the people went about
their ordinary daily business. But there is more being said here. The area
around Sodom and all the cities of the plain previous to their distruction was a
lush and extremely fertile agricultural area comparable to the garden of God.
a). Genesis
13:10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it
was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah,
even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto
Zoar.
2). Two
other witnesses in Scripture testify to its abundance of food and vineyards. It
was a very prosperous area with much commerce going on.
a). Ezekiel
16:49 Behold, this was the iniquity of
thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her
and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and
needy.
b).
Deuteronomy 32:32, 33 For their vine is of the vine of
Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their
clusters are bitter:
32:33 Their
wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.
