1 Peter 2:2



1 Peter 2:2

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

1. “As newborn babes…”

a. As [Strong: 5613 hos hoce probably adverb of comparative from 3739; which how, i.e. in that manner (very variously used, as follows):--about, after (that), (according) as (it had been, it were), as soon (as), even as (like), for, how (greatly), like (as, unto), since, so (that), that, to wit, unto, when(-soever), while, X with all speed.]

b. newborn [Strong: 738 artigennetos ar-teeg-en'-nay-tos from 737 and 1084; just born, i.e. (figuratively) a young convert:--new born.]

c. babes [Strong: 1025 brephos bref'-os of uncertain affinity; an infant (properly, unborn) literally or figuratively:--babe, (young) child, infant.]

1). Although Peter is primarily talking to new Christians, this exhortation can apply to every believer.

a). Luke 18:15-17 And they brought unto him also infants, that he would touch them: but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them.
18:16 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
18:17 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.

2. “…desire the sincere milk of the word…”

a. desire [Strong: 1971 epipotheo ep-ee-poth-eh'-o from 1909 and potheo (to yearn); to dote upon, i.e. intensely crave possession (lawfully or wrongfully):--(earnestly) desire (greatly), (greatly) long (after), lust.] [Thayer: to long for, desire, to pursue with love, to long after, to lust, harbour forbidden desire.]

1). We should never lose the earnest and strong desire to pursue God, His fellowship, His presence, and studying His word.

2). Psalm 42:1 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

b. [the] sincere [Strong: 97 adolos ad'-ol-os from 1 (as a negative particle}; and 1388; undeceitful, i.e. (figuratively) unadulterated:--sincere.] [Thayer: guileless, in things: unmixed, unadulterated, pure, in persons: without dishonest intent, guileless.]

c. milk [Strong: 1051 gala gal'-ah of uncertain affinity; milk (figuratively):--milk.]

d. [of the] word [Strong: 3050 logikos log-ik-os' from 3056; rational ("logical"):--reasonable, of the word.]

1). Just as newborns cannot eat solid food, newborn Christians should concentrate in their own personal study on the milk of the word. Just as Peter in verse one exhorted us to cast off carnal behavior, the milk of the word addresses primarily getting the flesh out of our lives. In his first epistle to the Corinthians the Apostle Paul spoke to this very thing. Walking in the flesh will hinder us from receiving the deeper things of the word of God.

a). 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
3:2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

2). As mature Christians we should include milk and meat not only in our diet, but also in what we walk in.

a). Hebrews 5:12-14  For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
5:13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

3. “…that ye may grow thereby:”

a. that [Strong: 2443 hina hin'-ah probably from the same as the former part of 1438 (through the demonstrative idea; compare 3588); in order that (denoting the purpose or the result):--albeit, because, to the intent (that), lest, so as, (so) that, (for) to.]

b. ye may grow [Strong: 837 auzano owx-an'-o a prolonged form of a primary verb; to grow ("wax"), i.e. enlarge (literal or figurative, active or passive):--grow (up), (give the) increase.]

c. thereby [Strong: 1722 en en a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]

1). The goal is to “grow” spiritually. Just as we grow physically we need to grow spiritually. Growing physically comes naturally, it just happens, especially if the body is fed correctly. The more healthy the persons eats, the more healthy the body is. In the spiritual it is a little different, in that, if the person does not eat mature food they will remain babies, spiritual babies. Growing spiritually depends on us “eating” or walking in obedience to what is being taught.

a). Isaiah 55:1, 2  Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
55:2 Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.

b). Verse 2 clearly likens “hearken diligently” to “eat ye”. Obedience to the word of God is eating the word.

1. “But the word of the Lord endureth for ever…”

1). Peter here is quoting Isaiah. Peter is also equating the gospel with the word of God which will endure forever


a). Isaiah 40:6-8 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:

40:7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.

40:8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.


2. “...And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”

f. gospel [is preached]  [Strong: 2097. euaggelizo yoo-ang-ghel-id'-zo from 2095 and 32; to announce good news ("evangelize") especially the gospel:--declare, bring (declare, show) glad (good) tidings, preach (the gospel).

1 Peter 1:23

Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

a. NLT: For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God.

b. NIV: For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

c. YLT: Being begotten again, not out of seed corruptible, but incorruptible, through a word of God -- living and remaining -- to the age;

d. Amplified Bible: For you have been born again [that is, reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose] not of seed which is perishable but [from that which is] imperishable and immortal, that is, through the living and everlasting word of God.

e. Amplified Bible Classic: You have been regenerated (born again), not from a mortal origin (seed, sperm), but from one that is immortal by the ever living and lasting Word of God.

1. “Being born again…”

a. [Being] born again [Strong: 313 anagennao an-ag-en-nah'-o from 303 and 1080; to beget or (by extension) bear (again):--beget, (bear) X (again).] [Thayer: to produce again, be born again, born anew,  metaph. to have one's mind changed so that he lives a new life and one conformed to the will of God.]

1). This is what Jesus was referring to in His conversation with Nicodemus, he was talking about the new birth.

a). John 3:3-7 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.


2). Likewise this is what Paul was talking about in Titus.

a). Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

b). The Greek word for “regeneration” is Strong’s #3824, ‘palinggenesia’ and it means, “new birth, reproduction, renewal, recreation, regeneration.”

3). Hence, we who are believers in Christ are as Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature…” The Amplified Bible says, “Therefore if any person is ingrafted in Christ the Messiah he is a new creation a new creature altogether…”

2. “…not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible…”

a. not [Strong: 3756 ou oo, also (before a vowel) ouk ook, and (before an aspirate) ouch ookh a primary word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+ long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but.]

d. seed [Strong: 4701 spora spor-ah' from 4687; a sowing, i.e. (by implication) parentage:--seed.]

e. but [Strong: 235 alla al-lah' neuter plural of 243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially) contrariwise (in many relations):--and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay, nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]

f. of incorruptible [Strong: 862 aphthartos af'-thar-tos from 1 (as a negative particle) and a derivative of 5351; undecaying (in essence or continuance):--not (in-, un-)corruptible, immortal.] [incorruptible: aphthartos; a-negative; phthartos-corruptible]

3. “…by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.”

a. by [Strong: 1223 dia dee-ah' a primary preposition denoting the channel of an act; through (in very wide applications, local, causal, or occasional):--after, always, among, at, to avoid, because of (that), briefly, by, for (cause) ... fore, from, in, by occasion of, of, by reason of, for sake, that, thereby, therefore, X though, through(-out), to, wherefore, with (-in). In composition it retains the same general importance.]

b. the word [Strong: 3056 logos log'-os from 3004; something said (including the thought); by implication, a topic (subject of discourse), also reasoning (the mental faculty) or motive; by extension, a computation; specially, (with the article in John) the Divine Expression (i.e. Christ):--account, cause, communication, X concerning, doctrine, fame, X have to do, intent, matter, mouth, preaching, question, reason, + reckon, remove, say(-ing), shew, X speaker, speech, talk, thing, + none of these things move me, tidings, treatise, utterance, word, work.]

d. which liveth [Strong: 2198 zao dzah'-o a primary verb; to live (literally or figuratively):--life(-time), (a-)live(-ly), quick.]

e. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

f. abideth [Strong: 3306 meno men'-o a primary verb; to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy):--abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry (for), X thine own.]

1). Peter declares here what other gospel writers have written, that God’s word is a living person, identified as Christ Jesus.

a). Hebrews 4:12, 13 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

b). Revelation 19:11-16 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

2). God’s word is not only living but it has existed from the eternity past to the eternal future.

a). Psalm 119:89 For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

b). Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
