1). When Israel first arrived at Sinai to receive the Law, it was the will of God that they as a nation would be a kingdom of priests to Him.

a). Exodus 19:4-6 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.

19:5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

19:6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

2). Israel, out of the wrong kind of fear rejected the privilege and instead chose to let someone else hear God and then tell the nation.

a). Exodus 20:18-20 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

20:19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

20:20   And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

20:21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

3). So the priesthood was given to the family of Aaron and the tribe of Levi, of which Aaron was from, was appointed to minister in the Tabernacle.

a). Exodus 28:1

b). Numbers 18:20-23 And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any part among them: I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel.

18:21 And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.

18:22 Neither must the children of Israel henceforth come nigh the tabernacle of the congregation, lest they bear sin, and die.

18:23 But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance.

4). The original anointing of the priesthood followed the family line, just as today there are levels of generations in one family who are in the ministry.

2.   “…even Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's sons.”

a. [even[ Aaron [Strong: Aaron [Strong: 175 'Aharown a-har-one' of uncertain derivation; Aharon, the brother of Moses:--Aaron.]

b. Nadab [Strong: 5070 Nadab naw-dawb' from 5068; liberal; Nadab, the name of four Israelites:--Nadab.]

c. [and] Abihu [Strong: 30 'Abiyhuw' ab-ee-hoo' from 1 and 1931; father (i.e. worshipper) of Him (i.e. God); Abihu, a son of Aaron:--Abihu.]

d. Eleazar [Strong: 499 'El`azar el-aw-zawr' from 410 and 5826; God (is) helper; Elazar, the name of seven Israelites:--Eleazar.]

e. [and] Ithamar [Strong: 385 'Iythamar eeth-aw-mawr' from 339 and 8558; coast of the palm-tree; Ithamar, a son of Aaron:--Ithamar.]

f. Aaron's [Strong: 175 'Aharown a-har-one' of uncertain derivation; Aharon, the brother of Moses:--Aaron.]

g. sons [Strong: 1121 ben bane from 1129; a son (as a builder of the family name), in the widest sense (of literal and figurative relationship, including grandson, subject, nation, quality or condition, etc., (like 1, 251, etc.)):--+ afflicted, age, (Ahoh-) (Ammon-) (Hachmon-) (Lev-)ite, (anoint-)ed one, appointed to, (+) arrow, (Assyr-) (Babylon-) (Egypt-) (Grec-)ian, one born, bough, branch, breed, + (young) bullock, + (young) calf, X came up in, child, colt, X common, X corn, daughter, X of first, + firstborn, foal, + very fruitful, + postage, X in, + kid, + lamb, (+) man, meet, + mighty, + nephew, old, (+) people, + rebel, + robber, X servant born, X soldier, son, + spark, + steward, + stranger, X surely, them of, + tumultuous one, + valiant(-est), whelp, worthy, young (one), youth.]

1). Nadab and Abihu died in the incident recorded in Leviticus 10:1 (See notes Leviticus 10).

2). Unger’s Bible Dictionary: “After the death of nadab and Abihu without children (Leviticus 10:1; Numbers 3:4), Eleazar was appointed chief over the principal Levites, to have the oversight of those who had the charge of the sanctuary (Numbers 3:32)…With his brother Ithamar he ministered as priest during their father’s lifetime. Immediately before the death of Aaron Moses went with them both unto Mount Hor, where he invested Eleazar with the sacred garments, as the successor of Aaron in the office of high priest (Numbers 20:25-29)…He also assisted at the inauguration of Joshua (Numbers 27:18-23)…”

Job 1:5

Job 1:5

And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

1.  “…and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all…”

a. Unger’s Bible Dictionary: In pre-Mosaic times the office of priest was occupied by the father of the family, or the head of a tribe for his own family or tribe. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob built altars, offered sacrifices, purified and consecrated themselves and their households (Genesis 12:7; 13:18; 26:25; 33:20; 35:1, 2). Melchizedek combined kingship and priesthood in his own person (Genesis 14:18). Jethro is not merely the spiritual, but also the civil head of Midian (Exodus 2:16; 3:1).

2.  “…for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.”

a. This is a fair assumption by Job because as the text later shows after the second onslaught by the devil upon Job, his wife suggested to him to curse God. This may have been a normal pattern for his wife, regardless, we as parents know the apples don’t fall far from the tree.

1). Job 2:9 Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.

Leviticus 6:8-13

Leviticus 6:8-13

Leviticus 6:8 And the Lord said to Moses,
Leviticus 6:9 Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the burnt offering: The burnt offering shall remain on the altar all night until morning; the fire shall be kept burning on the altar.
Leviticus 6:10 And the priest shall put on his linen garment and put his linen breeches on his body, and take up the ashes of what the fire has consumed with the burnt offering on the altar and put them beside the altar.
Leviticus 6:11 And he shall put off his garments and put on other garments, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a clean place.
Leviticus 6:12 And the fire upon the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not be allowed to go out. The priest shall burn wood on it every morning and lay the burnt offering in order upon it and he shall burn on it the fat of the peace offerings.
Leviticus 6:13 The fire shall be burning continually upon the altar; it shall not go out.

a. Two burnt offerings are mentioned, the evening offering, Leviticus 6:9, and the morning offering, Leviticus 6:12.

b. This was previously mentioned earlier in the book of Exodus.

1). Exodus 29:38-41Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar; two lambs of the first year day by day continually.
Exodus 29:39 The one lamb thou shalt offer in the morning; and the other lamb thou shalt offer at even:
And with the one lamb a tenth deal of flour mingled with the fourth part of an hin of beaten oil; and the fourth part of an hin of wine for a drink offering.
Exodus 29:40 And the other lamb thou shalt offer at even, and shalt do thereto according to the meat offering of the morning, and according to the drink offering thereof, for a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto the Lord.
Exodus 29:41 This shall be a continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the Lord: where I will meet you, to speak there unto thee.

c. The priest had the responsibility to keep the fire burning continually, it was not allowed to go out.

1). Leviticus 6:12, 13 And the fire upon the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not be allowed to go out. The priest shall burn wood on it every morning and lay the burnt offering in order upon it and he shall burn on it the fat of the peace offerings.
Leviticus 6:13 The fire shall be burning continually upon the altar; it shall not go out.

d. Seeing that the Old Covenant priesthood is a type and foreshadow of things in the New Covenant, we should see things in the New Testament that verify it.

1). We are the temple of God. Our God is a consuming fire and we have been baptized with the Holy Ghost and fire. We have the responsibility of keeping the fire lit and burning.

a). 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
1 Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

b). Hebrews 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.

c). Matthew 3:11, 12 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
Matthew 3:12Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

d). 2 Timothy 1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

(1). stir [329  * anazopureo; ana-up or again; soos-alive; pur-fire][Strong: to re-enkindle:--stir up.][Thayer: to kindle up, inflame one's mind, strength, zeal.]

1). Comparative passage:

a). Exodus 29:21 And thou shalt take of the blood that is upon the altar, and of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon the garments of his sons with him: and he shall be hallowed, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garments with him.

2). Hebrews 9:18-21 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.

9:19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,

9:20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.

9:21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.

3). 1). All the vessels of the ministry are consecrated unto God. Because we are New Testament priests unto God we therefore are consecrated unto God by the blood of Jesus.

a). Hebrews 10:5-10 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;

9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.

10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

4). Because we are New Testament priests we are to live our lives in sanctification to the Lord.

a). 1 Peter 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

b). But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

c). 1 Thessalonians 4:2-4 For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.

4:3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

4: 4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;

d). 2 Timothy 2:20, 21 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.

2:21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.

5). As New Testament priests we offer up spiritual sacrifices unto God through Jesus Christ our High Priest.

a). Romans 12:1, 2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

b). Hebrews 13:15, 16 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

13:16 But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
