Deuteronomy 26:6

Deuteronomy 26:6

And the Egyptians evil entreated, and afflicted us, and laid upon us hard bondage.

1. “And the Egyptians evil entreated, and afflicted us, and laid upon us hard bondage.”

1). This is speaking of the slavery Israel was subjected to in Egypt,

a). Exodus 1:7-14 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.
1:8 Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.
1:9 And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:
1:10 Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
1:11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.
1:12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.
1:13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:
1:14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.

2). Egypt is also a type and foreshadow of us being in the bondage of sin. Before the new birth we were under bondage to sin.

a). John 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

b). Proverbs 13:15 Good understanding giveth favor: but the way of transgressors is hard.

c). Ephesians 2:2, 3 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Deuteronomy 26:5

Deuteronomy 26:5

And thou shalt speak and say before the LORD thy God, A Syrian ready to perish was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and sojourned there with a few, and became there a nation, great, mighty, and populous:

a. ASV: And thou shalt answer and say before Jehovah thy God, A Syrian ready to perish was my father; and he went down into Egypt, and sojourned there, few in number; and he became there a nation, great, mighty, and populous.

b. YLT: 'And thou hast answered and said before Jehovah thy God, A perishing Aramaean is my father! and he goeth down to Egypt, and sojourneth there with few men, and becometh there a nation, great, mighty, and numerous;

1). Deuteronomy 26:5-10 is a confession of faith that the Israelites said every time they offered their firstfruits.

a). Deuteronomy 26:5-10 And thou shalt speak and say before the Lord thy God, A Syrian ready to perish was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and sojourned there with a few, and became there a nation, great, mighty, and populous:
6 And the Egyptians evil entreated us, and afflicted us, and laid upon us hard bondage:
7 And when we cried unto the Lord God of our fathers, the Lord heard our voice, and looked on our affliction, and our labour, and our oppression:
8 And the Lord brought us forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terribleness, and with signs, and with wonders:
9 And he hath brought us into this place, and hath given us this land, even a land that floweth with milk and honey.
10 And now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land, which thou, O Lord, hast given me. And thou shalt set it before the Lord thy God, and worship before the Lord thy God:

2). The beginning of this confession is speaking of Jacob.

a). Genesis 46:1-7 And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the god of his father Isaac.
46:2 And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I.
46:3 And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:
46:4 I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.
46:5 And Jacob rose up from Beersheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharoah had sent to carry him.
46:6 And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came to Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him:
46:7 His sons, and his sons’ sons with him, his daughters, and his sons’ daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt.

3). Notice that this confession made when presenting the firstfruits is different than the confession made when offering the tithe (Deuteronomy 26:12-15.)

And the priest shall take the basket out of thine hand, and set it down before the altar of the LORD thy God.

a. ASV: And the priest shall take the basket out of thy hand, and set it down before the altar of Jehovah thy God.

b. YLT: And the priest hath taken the basket out of thy hand, and placed it before the altar of Jehovah thy God.

c. Amplified Bible Classic: And the priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it down before the altar of the Lord your God.

d. Septuagint: And the priest shall take the basket out of thine hands, and shall set it before the altar of the Lord thy God:

1). According to the Scripture, what is being pictured here is not only what actually occurred during this offering, it is also a type and foreshadow of what is going on in heaven’s eternal sanctuary and the eternal priesthood of Jesus Christ.

a). Hebrews 8:3-6 (Amplified Bible) For every high priest is appointed to offer up gifts and sacrifices; so it is essential for this (High Priest) to have some offering to make also.
8:4 If then He were still living on earth, He would not be a priest at all, for there are already priests who offer the gifts in accordance with the Law.
8:5 But these offer service merely as a pattern and as a foreshadowing of what has its true existence and reality in the heavenly sanctuary. For when Moses was about to erect the tabernacle, he was warned by God, saying, See to it that you make it all exactly according to the copy (the model), which was shown to you on the mountain.
8:6 But as it now is, He (Christ) has acquired a priestly ministry which is as much superior and more excellent than the old as the covenant—the agreement—of which He is the Mediator (the Arbiter, Agent) is superior and more excellent; because it is enacted and rests upon more nobler promises.

2). Another look at Jesus’ priestly ministry is in Revelation.

a). Revelation 8:3-5 And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.
8:4 And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel’s hand.
8:5 And the angel took the censer, and filled it with the fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thundering, and lightnings, and an earthquake.

b). This, I believe is Jesus in his present priestly ministry, unless angels have taken over that job in heaven, which I do not believe.

3). Under the Old Covenant, the offering of the firstfruits was not only a particular offering, but Israel was considered to be the firstfruits of the LORD.

a). Jeremiah 2:3 “Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.”

4). We also are to be a kind of firstfruits unto God.

a). James 1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.”

Deuteronomy 26:3

And thou shalt go unto the priest that shall be in those days, and say unto him, I profess this day unto the LORD thy God, that I am come unto the country which  the LORD sware unto our fathers for to give us.

a. ASV: And thou shalt come unto the priest that shall be in those days, and say unto him, I profess this day unto Jehovah thy God, that I am come unto the land which Jehovah sware unto our fathers to give us.

b. YLT: 'And thou hast come in unto the priest who is in those days, and hast said unto him, I have declared to-day to Jehovah thy God, that I have come in unto the land which Jehovah hath sworn to our fathers to give to us;

c. Amplified Bible Classic: And thou shalt go unto the priest that shall be in those days, and say unto him, I profess this day unto the Lord thy God, that I am come unto the country which the Lord sware unto our fathers for to give us.

1). This is a commandment that will last throughout many generations of priests.

a). Hebrews 7:23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:

2). Under the New Covenant Jesus is the priest the High Priest that is in these days.

a). Hebrews 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

3). In the New Covenant all believers are a nation of priest’s.

a). 1 Peter 2:9 “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you forth out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

[thy] God [Strong: 430 ʼĕlôhîym, el-o-heem'; plural of H433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative:—angels, × exceeding, God (gods) (-dess, -ly), × (very) great, judges, × mighty.]

1). Here we see a vital element in this offering, a confession or profession before the priest. This was a specific profession the Israelite had to say as they offered the firstfruits. The only time a profession is given in the offering of a “tithe” is the tithe that was offered every third year which is listed in Deuteronomy 26:12 and Deuteronomy 14:28. There is no profession listed in association with any other giving of tithe except the tithe which was given every third year. The content of the confessions were completely different, as were the destinations of the offerings, which confirms they were different offerings, they were not the same! The Jewish people were taught that their words were important, especially in their relationship with God. There is a sad lack of this in the Body of Christ. Just as the Jewish people under the Old Covenant our words are important. We are to hold fast our profession.

a). Hebrews 4:14 “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

b). Hebrews 10:23 “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

2). Jesus is the high priest of our profession.

a). Hebrews 3:1 “Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;”

3). Jesus receives our words and everything we offer to Him and he offers them to the Father.

a). Hebrews 8:3 For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.

4). It is clear from the book of Hebrews that Jesus being our High Priest after the order of Melchizedek also receives our tithes.

a). Hebrews 7:8 And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

1). Comparing Scripture with Scripture, it is obvious that the sons of God are angels. In the following passage the context is the creation of the earth.

a). 1). Job 38:4-7  Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare if thou hast understanding.
38:5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who hath stretched the line upon it?
38:6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner stone thereof;
38:7 When all the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

a). This word is used only 5 times in the Bible: Deuteronomy 31:14; 1 Samuel 10:19; Job 1:6; 2:1 (twice). The use of the phrase “came to present themselves” implies that the devil or his angels just don’t drop in on God any time they please. It seems that there is a set time and they fulfill the appointment.

f. before the LORD [3068 * Yhovah] [Strong: from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.]

1). These are the same “sons of God” that are referred to in the early chapters of Genesis, who incredibly as it sounds had sexual intercourse with daughters of men.

a). a). Genesis 6:1-4 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
6:3 And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

2). After the flood there was another group of angels who had previously joined Lucifer’s rebellion before the creation of man, this other group of fallen angels committed the additional sin of having sexual relations with human women. Because of this there were giants after the flood all the way up to the time of David.

b). 2 Samuel 21:15-22   Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint.
21:16 And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.
21:17 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.
21:18 And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant.
21:19 And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.
21:20 And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant.

21:22 These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

3). I believe these Scriptures reveal that Satan cannot just drop in on God anytime he pleases, but there is an appointed time when Satan and his angels are required by God to appear before Him and give account of their doings.

And it came to pass on the marrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in Mount Gilboa.

2). A common characteristic after a battle was that the victor plundered the bodies of the fallen, and in some cases, dismembering them.

2. “…that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in Mount Gilboa.”

b. The discovery of the remains of Saul and his sons was a prize.

1 Samuel 31:9

And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.

1. “And they cut off his head, and stripped of his armour…”

a. 1 Chronilcles 10:9 “And when they had stripped him, they took his head, and his armour…”

b. When David fought Goliath, he first knocked him down and out with a slingshot to the head, then killed by cutting off his head.

1). 1 Samuel 17:50, 51 “So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.
Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.”

c. David then brought the head of Goliath to Jerusalem.

d. The sword ended up in Nob, the city of the priests.

1 Samuel 21:9 And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.

2. “…and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.”

a. 1 Chronicles 10:9 “…and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry tidings unto their idols, and to the people.”

c. These people were very religious. The preaching, the announcing, or the showing of the good tidings that Saul their enemy was dead and his body and armour and that of his sons could be seen in their temples, all this was being accomplished in their houses of worship, where they worshipped their devils. Check out 1 Corinthians 10:20.

1). 1 Corinthians 10:20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

2). As they were praising their god they were worshipping the devil.

d. At the news of the deaths of Saul and Jonathan, David wrote a song and in the song he implored the the news not be published in Gath or Askelon because it would cause the Philistines to rejoice.

1). 2 Samuel 1:20 “Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the uncircumsized triumph.

2). triumph [5937 * alaz][Strong’s; to jump for joy.]

3). No doubt the rejoicing would be similar to the rejoicing of the Philistines because of the capture of Samson.

a). Jedges 16:23, 24 Judges 16:23, 24 “Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.
And when the people saw him, they praised their god: for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, which slew many of us.

e. Saul ended up being a trophy of the enemies of God’s people. After they were slain, Saul and his sons bodily members, were treated as spiritual trophies in the houses of their gods. When we sin against God and fall in front of the world, we become trophies of the enemy.

1). Romans 2:23, 24 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?
For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.

a). 2 Samuel 12:7-14 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;
And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.
Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.
Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

1 Samuel 31:10

And they put his armour in the house of Ashtoroth: and they fastened his body to the wall of Bethshan.

1. “And they put his armour in the house of Ashtoroth…”

a. 1 Chronicles 10:10 And they put his armour in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.

b. Looking at both passages we see the body and head and armour of Saul all went to different locations.

1). 1 Samuel 31:10 says his armour went to the house of Ashtoroth.

a).  Ashstoroth [6252 * Ashtarowth][Strong: a Sidonian god.]

2). According to 1 Samuel 31:10, his body went to Bethshan.

a). Bethshan [1052 * Beyth Shean][Strong’s: house of ease.]

3). 1 Chronicles 10:10 says his head went to the temple of Dagon.

a).  Dagon [1712 * Dagown][Strong’s: the fish god of the Philistines.]

c. Looking at the previous verse it seems that these three items went throughout the Philistine nation and then were permanently fixed to these three locations.

1). And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.

d. The bodies of his sons were included.

1). 1 Samuel 31:12 “All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.”

e. Under the Old Covenant especially bodily members were weapons. Under the New Covenant it is also true that our bodily members are weapons also.

1). Romans 6:13 “Neither yield ye your members snstruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive unto from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.”

(1). The Greek word for “yield” is the same word used in Romans 12:1 for “present”. In light of that, as we are obedient to God’s word, we are presenting our bodily members to God, as “weapons”, Romans 6:13; as “servants”, Romans 6:16; and as “sacrifices”, Romans 12:1. 

b). instruments [3696 * hoplon][Zodhiates: in the plural, standing for weapons of warfare.]

2). Jeremiah 51:20 “Thou art my battle axe and weapons of war…”

f. Because of Christ’s victory and our repentance and making him Lord of our lives, he leads us in victory.

1). 2 Corinthians 2:14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
