HASHEM, and the Satan, too, came among them
1. “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present
themselves before the LORD…”
a. now there was a day [3117 * yowm]
[Strong: from an unused root meaning to be hot; a day (as the warm hours),
whether literal (from sunrise to sunset, or from one sunset to the next), or
figurative (a space of time defined by an associated term), (often used
adverb):--age, + always, + chronicals, continually(-ance), daily, ((birth-),
each, to) day, (now a, two) days (agone), + elder, X end, + evening, + (for)
ever(-lasting, -more), X full, life, as (so) long as (... live), (even) now, +
old, + outlived, + perpetually, presently, + remaineth, X required, season, X
since, space, then, (process of) time, + as at other times, + in trouble,
weather, (as) when, (a, the, within a) while (that), X whole (+ age), (full)
year(-ly), + younger.]
b. the sons [1121 * ben] [Strong: from 1129;
a son (as a builder of the family name), in the widest sense (of literal and
figurative relationship, including grandson, subject, nation, quality or
condition, etc., (like 1, 251, etc.)):--+ afflicted, age, (Ahoh-) (Ammon-)
(Hachmon-) (Lev-)ite, (anoint-)ed one, appointed to, (+) arrow, (Assyr-)
(Babylon-) (Egypt-) (Grec-)ian, one born, bough, branch, breed, + (young)
bullock, + (young) calf, X came up in, child, colt, X common, X corn, daughter,
X of first, + firstborn, foal, + very fruitful, + postage, X in, + kid, + lamb,
(+) man, meet, + mighty, + nephew, old, (+) people, + rebel, + robber, X
servant born, X soldier, son, + spark, + steward, + stranger, X surely, them
of, + tumultuous one, + valiant(-est), whelp, worthy, young (one), youth.]
c. of God [430 * 'elohiym] [Strong:
plural of 433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the
plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally
applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a
superlative:--angels, X exceeding, God (gods)(-dess, -ly), X (very) great,
judges, X mighty.]
1). Comparing Scripture with
Scripture, it is obvious that the sons of God are angels. In the following
passage the context is the creation of the earth.
a). 1). Job 38:4-7 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of
the earth? declare if thou hast understanding.
38:5 Who hath laid the measures
thereof, if thou knowest? Or who hath stretched the line upon it?
38:6 Whereupon are the foundations
thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner stone thereof;
38:7 When all the morning stars
sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
d. came [935 * bow’] [Strong: a
primitive root; to go or come (in a wide variety of applications):--abide,
apply, attain, X be, befall, + besiege, bring (forth, in, into, to pass), call,
carry, X certainly, (cause, let, thing for) to come (against, in, out, upon, to
pass), depart, X doubtless again, + eat, + employ, (cause to) enter (in, into,
-tering, -trance, -try), be fallen, fetch, + follow, get, give, go (down, in,
to war), grant, + have, X indeed, (in-)vade, lead, lift (up), mention, pull in,
put, resort, run (down), send, set, X (well) stricken (in age), X surely, take
(in), way.]
e. to present themselves [3320 * yatsab]
[Strong: a primitive root; to place (any thing so as to stay); reflexively, to
station, offer, continue:--present selves, remaining, resort, set (selves), (be
able to, can, with-) stand (fast, forth, -ing, still, up).]
a). This word is used only 5 times
in the Bible: Deuteronomy 31:14; 1 Samuel 10:19; Job 1:6; 2:1 (twice). The use
of the phrase “came to present themselves” implies that the devil or his angels
just don’t drop in on God any time they please. It seems that there is a set
time and they fulfill the appointment.
f. before the LORD [3068 * Yhovah]
[Strong: from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish
national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.]
1). These are the same “sons of
God” that are referred to in the early chapters of Genesis, who incredibly as
it sounds had sexual intercourse with daughters of men.
a). a). Genesis 6:1-4 And it came
to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters
were born unto them,
6:2 That the sons of God saw the
daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which
they chose.
6:3 And the Lord said, My spirit
shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall
be an hundred and twenty years.
6:4 There were giants in the earth
in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the
daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men
which were of old, men of renown.
2). After the flood there was
another group of angels who had previously joined Lucifer’s rebellion before
the creation of man, this other group of fallen angels committed the additional
sin of having sexual relations with human women. Because of this there were
giants after the flood all the way up to the time of David.
a). 1 Samuel 17:1-58 (Goliath)
b). 2 Samuel 21:15-22 Moreover the Philistines had
yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and
fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint.
21:16 And Ishbibenob, which was of
the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels
of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain
David.
21:17 But Abishai the son of
Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men
of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle,
that thou quench not the light of Israel.
21:18 And it came to pass after
this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai
the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant.
21:19 And there was again a battle
in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a
Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear
was like a weaver's beam.
21:20 And there was yet a battle
in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers,
and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to
the giant.
21:21 And when he defied Israel,
Jonathan the son of Shimeah the brother of David slew him.
21:22 These four were born to the
giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.
3). I believe these Scriptures
reveal that Satan cannot just drop in on God anytime he pleases, but there is
an appointed time when Satan and his angels are required by God to appear
before Him and give account of their doings.
2. “…and Satan came also among them.”
a. and Satan [7854 * satan]
[Strong: from 7853; an opponent; especially (with the article prefixed)
Satan, the arch-enemy of good:--adversary, Satan, withstand.]
b. came also [935 * bow’] [Strong:
a primitive root; to go or come (in a wide variety of applications):--abide,
apply, attain, X be, befall, + besiege, bring (forth, in, into, to pass), call,
carry, X certainly, (cause, let, thing for) to come (against, in, out, upon, to
pass), depart, X doubtless again, + eat, + employ, (cause to) enter (in, into,
-tering, -trance, -try), be fallen, fetch, + follow, get, give, go (down, in,
to war), grant, + have, X indeed, (in-)vade, lead, lift (up), mention, pull in,
put, resort, run (down), send, set, X (well) stricken (in age), X surely, take
(in), way.]
c. among them[8432 * tavek]
[Strong: from an unused root meaning to sever; a bisection, i.e. (by
implication) the centre:--among(-st), X between, half, X (there- ,where-),
in(-to), middle, mid(-night), midst (among), X out (of), X through, X
with(-in).]
