 Matthew 1:18


Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

1. “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise…”

2. “…When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together…”

mother [Strong: 3384. meter may'-tare apparently a primary word; a "mother" (literally or figuratively, immediate or remote):--mother.]

e. espoused [Strong: 3423. mnesteuo mnace-tyoo'-o from a derivative of 3415; to give a souvenir (engagement present), i.e. betroth:--espouse.]

[Zodhiates: To ask in marriage, to woo. In the NT used only in the passive, meaning to be asked in marriage, to be bethrothed….The betrothal ceremony perpetuated in a conventional fashion the recollection of the time when a woman was purchased from her family, (Deuteronomy 20:7. When a woman was designated (Exodus 21:8, 9) by the head of her family as the future wife of another man, the prospective bridegroom paid a certain sum of money (or service as in the case of Jacob). A contract, which was inviolable, was then entered into (Genesis 34:12; Exodus 22:17). Until the time of the actual marriage, the brined to be remained in her own family. It was not permissible to betroth her to any other man except by action amounting to divorce, and any violation of the rights established by the betrothal was as serious as if the two persons had been ceremonially married Deuteronomy 22:23, 24)…separation of betrothed persons demanded a divorce, and there seems to have been no taboo in their living together as man and wife previous to the wedding ceremony. The children of such a union would be regarded as legitimate. Insofar as the virgin Mary and Joseph are concerned, the use of the verb “mnesteuomai”, indicates a betrothal ceremony. There is no mention, however, of a subsequent wedding ceremony. It was during this period of betrothal that the angel appeared to Mary (Matthew 1:18).]

2. “…she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.”

1). Thayer: The idea for sure is a woman with child begins to show, the child in the womb grows causing the belly to get large.


c. Holy [Strong: 40. hagios hag'-ee-os from hagos (an awful thing) (compare 53, 2282); sacred (physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated):--(most) holy (one, thing), saint.] 


d. Ghost [Strong: 4151. pneuma pnyoo'-mah from 4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit:--ghost, life, spirit(-ual, -ually), mind.]


1). After the announcement to Mary of her pregnancy by the angel Gabriel, Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth. She stayed with her for three months, enough time for her to begin showing. It is probably at this time that Joseph found out. The circumstances were no doubt extremely uncomfortable for everyone in the family.
