Titus 2:12

Titus 2:12

 

Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

1. “Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts…”

 

a. teaching [Strong: 3811. paideuo pahee-dyoo'-o from 3816; to train up a child, i.e. educate, or (by implication), discipline (by punishment):--chasten(-ise), instruct, learn, teach.] [Zodhiates: Originally to bring up a child, to educate, used of activity directed toward the moral and spiritual nurture and training of the child, to influence conscious will and action. To instruct, correct, chastise.]

 

b. us [Strong: 2248 * hemas hay-mas' accusative case plural of 1473; us:--our, us, we.]

 

c. that [Strong: 2443 * hina hin'-ah probably from the same as the former part of 1438 (through the demonstrative idea; compare 3588); in order that (denoting the purpose or the result):--albeit, because, to the intent (that), lest, so as, (so) that, (for) to.]

i. worldly [Strong: 2886. kosmikos kos-mee-kos' from 2889 (in its secondary sense); terrene ("cosmic"), literally (mundane) or figuratively (corrupt):--worldly.] [Zodhiates: Worldly, what belongs to the world, the opposite of heavenly or spiritual. In Titus 2:12 “worldly lusts” pertain to those desire of the world which estrange a person from God.]

 

j. lusts [Strong: 1939 * epithumia ep-ee-thoo-mee'-ah from 1937; a longing (especially for what is forbidden):--concupiscence, desire, lust (after).]

 

1). From the above definitions we can clearly see that the belief that grace is mostly just the “initial justification forgiveness at coming to Christ and forgiveness and restoration when we sin” is not the whole truth. As we saw in Titus 2:11 the Hebrew and Greek words for salvation consists of deliverance, safety, preservation, healing and soundness. Grace not only instructs us to “deny, reject, give up and refuse ungodly and worldly lusts”, it also gives us the power and ability to do so.

 

a). Matthew 5:27-30 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

5:30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

 

b). Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

 

c). Galatians 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

 

2). Scripture is clear, we can “receive the grace of God in vain” [2 Corinthians 6:1], or “fail of the grace of God” [Hebrews 12:15]. The word “fail” is [hystereo * 5302] and it means “fail to reach the goal, fail to become a partaker, to be left behind, to fall short of the end.”

 

a). 2 Corinthians 6:1 We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.

 

b). Hebrews 12:15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

 

3). In his conclusion of the exhortation to the Corinthian church about receiving “the grace of God in vain”, Paul did not mince words about our responsibility as believers.

 

a). 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

6:15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

6:16 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

6:17 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

 

2. “…we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

 

a. we should live [Strong: 2198 * zao dzah'-o a primary verb; to live (literally or figuratively):--life(-time), (a-)live(-ly), quick.]

 

b. soberly [Strong: 4996 * sophronos so-fron'-oce adverb from 4998; with sound mind, i.e. moderately:--soberly.] [Thayer’s: with sound mind, soberly, temperately, discreetly.]
