1 Timothy 4:10



1 Timothy 4:10

For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

a. NLT: This is why we work hard and continue to struggle, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.

b. NIV: That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.
    
c. YLT: For for this we both labour and are reproached, because we hope on the living God, who is Saviour of all men -- especially of those believing.         

d. Amplified Bible Classic: With a view to this we toil and strive, [yes and]suffer reproach, because we have [fixed our] hope on the living God, Who is the Savior (Preserver, Maintainer, Deliverer) of all men, especially of those who believe (trust in, rely on, and adhere to Him).

e. Worrell Translation: For to this end we labor and strive, because we have set our hope on the living God, Who is a Savior of all men, especially of believers.

f. Wuest Translation: For with a view to this we are laboring to the point of exhaustion; yes, we are putting forth great efforts against opposition, because we have set our hope permanently upon the living God who is the Saviour of all men, especially of believers.

1. “For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God…”

a. For [Strong: 1063 gar gar a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]

b. therefore [Strong: 1519 eis ice a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial phrases:--(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), ...ward, (where-)fore, with. Often used in composition with the same general import, but only with verbs (etc.) expressing motion (literally or figuratively).]

1). Whenever you see a “therefore”, find out what it’s there for. The bottom line in all of this is the fact we trust in the living God who is our Savior. We look beyond it all, at the bigger picture.

d. we…labor [Strong: 2872 kopiao kop-ee-ah'-o from a derivative of 2873; to feel fatigue; by implication, to work hard:--(bestow) labour, toil, be wearied.] [Thayer’s: of bodily labour, to labour with wearisome effort, to toil.]

e. both [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

g. suffer reproach [Strong: 3679 oneidizo on-i-did'-zo from 3681; to defame, i.e. rail at, chide, taunt:--cast in teeth, (suffer) reproach, revile, upbraid.] [Thayer’s: to reproach, upbraid, revile.]

h. because [Strong: 3754 hoti hot'-ee neuter of 3748 as conjunction; demonstrative, that (sometimes redundant); causative, because:--as concerning that, as though, because (that), for (that), how (that), (in) that, though, why.]

i. we trust elpizo el-pid'-zo from 1680; to expect or confide:--(have, thing) hope(-d) (for), trust.]

j. in [Strong: 1909 epi ep-ee' a primary preposition; properly, meaning superimposition (of time, place, order, etc.), as a relation of distribution (with the genitive case), i.e. over, upon, etc.; of rest (with the dative case) at, on, etc.; of direction (with the accusative case) towards, upon, etc.:--about (the times), above, after, against, among, as long as (touching), at, beside, X have charge of, (be-, (where-))fore, in (a place, as much as, the time of, -to), (because) of, (up-)on (behalf of), over, (by, for) the space of, through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), with. In compounds it retains essentially the same import, at, upon, etc. (literally or figuratively).]

k. the living [Strong: 2198  zao dzah'-o a primary verb; to live (literally or figuratively):--life(-time), (a-)live(-ly), quick.]

l. God [Strong: 2316 theos theh'-os of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]

2. “…who is the Saviour of all men…”

a. who [Strong: 3739 hos hos, including feminine he hay, and neuter ho ho probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]

b. is [Strong: 2076 esti es-tee' third person singular present indicative of 1510; he (she or it) is; also (with neuter plural) they are:--are, be(-long), call, X can(-not), come, consisteth, X dure for a while, + follow, X have, (that) is (to say), make, meaneth, X must needs, + profit, + remaineth, + wrestle.]

c. the Saviour [Strong: 4990 soter so-tare' from 4982; a deliverer, i.e. God or Christ:--saviour.]

d. of all [Strong: 3956 pas pas including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole:--all (manner of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.]

e. men [Strong: 444 anthropos anth'-ro-pos from 435 and ops (the countenance; from 3700); man-faced, i.e. a human being:--certain, man.]
     
1). Jesus is the Saviour of all men because he died for all.

a). John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

2). It is not God’s will that any perish.

a). 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

b). 1 Timothy 2:4 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

c). Acts 17:26, 27 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
17:27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

3). The redemption that God paid for through Jesus Christ was for all men. The teaching that some men and women are pre-destined for heaven and some men and women are pre-destined for hell is a false teaching. One of the most powerful words in the lips of Jesus in regard to forgiveness and salvation is the word “whosoever”.

a). John 3:15, 16 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

b). John 4:13, 14 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

c). Acts 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

d). Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

3. “…specially of those that believe.”

a. specially  [Strong: 3122 malista mal'-is-tah neuter plural of the superlative of an apparently primary adverb mala (very); (adverbially) most (in the greatest degree) or particularly:--chiefly, most of all, (e-)specially.] [Thayer’s: especially, chiefly, most of all, above all.]

1). Jesus is especially the Savior of those who believe because we have received Him and are born again. We have entered into Covenant with God and through faith can receive all the promises given in the Covenant. Hallelujah!  

b. [of those that] believe [Strong: 4103 pistos pis-tos' from 3982; objectively, trustworthy; subjectively, trustful:--believe(-ing, -r), faithful(-ly), sure, true.]
