Romans 10:9
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,
and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou
shalt be saved.
a. NLT: If you confess with your
mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the
dead, you will be saved.
b. NIV: If you declare with your
mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the
dead, you will be saved.
c. YLT: that if thou mayest
confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and mayest believe in thy heart that God
did raise him out of the dead, thou shalt be saved,
d. Amplified Bible: Because if you
acknowledge and confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and
in your heart believe (adhere to, trust in, and rely on the truth) that God
raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

1. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord
Jesus…”
a. that [3754 * hoti] [Strong: neuter
of 3748 as conjunction; demonstrative, that (sometimes redundant); causative,

1). The covenant truth commanding
us to speak/meditate God’s words goes back to before Joshua.
a). Joshua 1:8 This book of the
law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and
night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein:
for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
2). When we confess God’s word we
are returning God’s word to Him.
a). Isaiah 55:10, 11 For as the
rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but
watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to
the sower, and bread to the eater:
55:11 So shall my word be that
goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall
accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
d. with [1722 * en] [Strong: a
primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and
(by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation

h. Jesus [2424 * Iesous] [Strong: of
Hebrew origin (3091); Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two
(three) other Israelites:--Jesus.]
2. “…and shalt believe in thine heart…”

4. “…thou shalt be saved.”
a. thou shalt be saved [4982 * sozo][Zodhiates:
to save, deliver, make whole, preserve safe from danger, loss, destruction…Sozo
occurs fifty-four times in the Gospels [fifty-six in the KJV]. Of the instances
where sozo is used, fourteen relate to deliverance from disease or demon
possession; in twenty instances, the inference is to the rescue of physical
life from some impending peril or instant death; the remaining twenty times,
the reference is to spiritual salvation.]

ideas of deliverance, safety, preservation, healing, and soundness. Salvation
is the great inclusive word of the Gospel, gathering into itself all the
redemptive acts and processes: as justification, redemption, grace,
propitiation, imputation, forgiveness, sanctification, and glorification.”

[Strong: feminine of a derivative of 4990 as (properly, abstract) noun; rescue
or safety (physically or morally):--deliver, health, salvation, save, saving.]
[Thayer: deliverance, preservation, safety, salvation, deliverance from the
molestation of enemies, in an ethical sense, that which concludes to the soul's
safety or salvation, of Messianic salvation, salvation as the present
possession of all true Christians, future salvation, the sum of benefits and
blessings which the Christians, redeemed from all earthly ills, will enjoy
after the visible return of Christ from heaven in the consummated and eternal
kingdom of God.]
2). The Greek word for “salvation”
is of course different than the Greek word for “saved but as Scofield notes it
is “the great inclusive word of the Gospel, gathering into itself all the
redemptive acts and processes”. In order to get a clearer revelation of what
the Scriptures say concerning “saved” i.e., sozo I will list some of the verses
that are the most enlightening.
a). Matthew 9:22 But Jesus turned
him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy
faith hath made thee whole [sozo]. And
the woman was made whole [sozo] from that hour.
b). Mark 10:52 And Jesus said unto
him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole [sozo]. And immediately he
received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.
3). In Luke chapter eight the word
sozo is used three different times for three different maladies. Deliverance
from devils, physical healing, and being raised from the dead.
a). Luke 8:36 They also which saw
it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed
[sozo].
b). Luke 8:48 And he said unto
her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole [sozo]; go in
peace.
c). Luke 8:49, 50, 54, 55 While he
yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to
him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.
8:50 But when Jesus heard it, he
answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole
[sozo].
8:54 And he put them all out, and
took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.
8:55 And her spirit came again,
and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.
4). Notice the English “healed”
isused but the Greek word “sozo” is in the text.
a). Acts 14:8-10 And there sat a
certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's
womb, who never had walked:
14:9 The same heard Paul speak:
who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed
[sozo],
14:10 Said with a loud voice,
Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.
5). One of the most revealing is a well-known
passage in Acts 4 where physical healing is mentioned in conjunction with both
Greek words, salvation/soteria and saved/sozo. Note closely in Acts 4:12 where
both are used.
a). Acts 4:8-10 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said
unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,
4:9 If we this day be examined of
the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole [sozo];
4:10 Be it known unto you all, and
to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom
ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand
here before you whole.
4:11 This is the stone which was
set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
4:12 Neither is there salvation in
any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby
we must be saved.
6). Looking at these examples in the
Scriptures we can see that being “saved” is a whole lot more than just going to
heaven.
a). World Outreach Church Daily
Devotional 1/2/14 What if you need a miracle, but God doesn’t move sovereignly
through the gifts of the Spirit to give you one? Don’t be surprised if He
doesn’t; He never promised He would. In fact, God didn’t design the gifts of
the Spirit for the Church. He intended them to be divine “advertisements” or
signs to an unsaved world. Of course, God loves us so much that He does
manifest spiritual gifts among Christians for our blessing, but He doesn’t
expect us to sit and wait to be blessed by a sovereign move of His Spirit. How
do I know that? Look at 2 Corinthians 5:7: “For we walk by faith, not by
sight.” Notice this verse does not say, “For we walk by the sovereignty of God,
and we hope He operates quickly.” Nor does it say, “For we sit back and wait
for God to move on our behalf, even if it takes forty years.” No, it says we
walk by faith—not sight. What happens if a person walks by faith? The same
thing that happened to the woman of Canaan in Matthew 15:28: “O woman, great is
thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt.” God expects believers to
believe—and use faith to initiate miracles. So don’t sit back and wait! Go to
God’s Word and find out His will; then reach out by faith and take hold of what
already belongs to you.
