1 Thessalonians 1:1



1 Thessalonians 1:1

Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

a. NLT: This letter is from Paul, Silas, and Timothy. We are writing to the church in Thessalonica, to you who belong to God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. May God give you grace and peace.

1. “Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians…”

a. Paul [Strong: 3972 Paulos pow'-los of Latin origin; (little; but remotely from a derivative of 3973, meaning the same); Paulus, the name of a Roman and of an apostle:--Paul, Paulus.]

b. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

c. Silvanus [Strong: 4610 Silouanos sil-oo-an-os' of Latin origin; "silvan"; Silvanus, a Christian:--Silvanus.]

d. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

1). These three, Paul, Silvanus (Silas), and Timotheus (Timothy) ministered at Thessalonica together, during Paul’s second missionary tour. In verse one we see Paul’s authorship of the epistle.

a). Acts 15:40, 41 And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.
15:41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.

b). Acts 16:1-3 Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek:
16:2 Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.
16:3 Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.

c) Acts 17:1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

2). From the testimony in Acts 17:1-10 it appears that Paul stayed in Thessalonica at least three weeks and fled the city by night.

17:2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,
17:3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.
17:4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.
17:5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.
17:6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
17:7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.
17:8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.
17:9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.
17:10And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

3). Even though Paul and his team were only in Thessalonica three weeks, the new born church at Philippi sent two offerings to Paul.

a). Philippians 4:15, 16 Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.
4:16 For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.

2. “…which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ…”

a. c. the Father [Strong: 3962 pater pat-ayr' apparently a primary word; a "father" (literally or figuratively, near or more remote):--father, parent.]

3. “…Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

1). The Apostle Paul began all of his epistles or ended them in a similar manner always using the words grace and peace. Grace and peace to us from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Every time Paul opened his epistle he was saying “grace, that which affords joy, good will, loving-kindness, favour, merciful kindness by which God, exerts His holy influence upon you, turns you to Christ, keeping, strengthening, increasing you in grace, and peace harmony, concord, security, safety, prosperity, felicity, a peace that passes all understanding to you from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ.
