Deuteronomy 8:3


And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

3. “…but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.”

1). From the wording it is clear there is a revelation God wants to give. The revelation deals with the nature of man. Man is a three part being, he is a spirit, he has a soul and he lives in a body. We live in a physical world but we are primarily spirit beings. Our physical bodies are nourished by physical food, but our spiritual lives are not, they are nourished by something entirely different. The revelation involves getting our priorities in the proper order. The feeding of our inner man by the word of God takes priority over the feeding of our physical man. Though we die if we do not eat physically, the importance is on the feeding of the spirit man in a right relationship with God by obedience to the Scriptures.


a). Job 23:12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.


2). The goal and purpose of fasting is to gain that priority. In denying our physical bodies its nourishment in order to focus on our Lord in prayer and meditation there will result a fresh sensitivity to spiritual things. A revelation that yes, indeed, the spiritual is the most important, my relationship with God is the priority. The feeding of the inner man the word of God is a theme revealed all through Scripture.


a). Isaiah 55:1, 2 Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

55:3 Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.


b). It is clear from this passage in Isaiah 55 that the “eating” is obedience, it is to “hearken” to the word.


3). Another example comes from 1 Peter 2 where faithful obedience translates to one who has “tasted” the word of God.


a). 1 Peter 2:1-3 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

2:3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.


4). That this revelation is critical to our walking out in our faith lives is demonstrated by Jesus in his ability to overcome temptation in the wilderness. Not only did Jesus quote a portion of this particular verse, but to every temptation Jesus responded to it with the word of God 


a). Matthew 4:1-11 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

4:2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

4:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

4:9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

4:11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.


5). Using the word of God to resist and overcome temptation is an essential part of the weaponry that God has faithfully provided to His church.


a). Ephesians 6:13-17 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
