Jairus' daughter and the woman with the issue of blood

Jairus’ daughter and the woman with the issue of blood

a. I originally did this study over 25 years ago. It is now 2/24/12. I did the study to try to get an answer on the seeming contradiction between Matthew 9:18 and Mark 5:23. Let’s face it, there is a big difference between being dead and being almost dead, this is an obvious contradiction. So I gathered the three accounts in Matthew, Mark, and Luke and I went at it, breaking down every verse to find the exact step by step action of Jesus. What I found out was very faith building and comforting, God’s word does not contradict itself.

A. Matthew 9:18-26 While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.
Matthew 9:19 And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples.
Matthew 9:20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:
Matthew 9:21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.
Matthew 9:22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
Matthew 9:23 And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,
Matthew 9:24 He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.
Matthew 9:25 But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose.
Matthew 9:26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.

B. Mark 5:21-43 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.
Mark 5:22 And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,
Mark 5:23 And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.
Mark 5:24 And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.
Mark 5:25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,
Mark 5:26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
Mark 5:27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
Mark 5:28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
Mark 5:29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in [her] body that she was healed of that plague.
Mark 5:30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?
Mark 5:31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
Mark 5:32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
Mark 5:33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
Mark 5:34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
Mark 5:35 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?
Mark 5:36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
Mark 5:37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.
Mark 5:38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.
Mark 5:39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
Mark 5:40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.
Mark 5:41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
Mark 5:42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
Mark 5:43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.

C. Luke 8:40-56 And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.
Luke 8:41 And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house:
Luke 8:42 For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him.
Luke 8:43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,
Luke 8:44 Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.
Luke 8:45 And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
Luke 8:46 And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.
Luke 8:47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.
Luke 8:48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
Luke 8:49 While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.
Luke 8:50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.
Luke 8:51 And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.
Luke 8:52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.
Luke 8:53 And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.
Luke 8:54 And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.
Luke 8:55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.
Luke 8:56 And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.

1. Jesus had just passed over from the country of the Gadarenes and his ship had just landed at shore. Jesus was still near the shore when Jairus comes up and falls at his feet.

a. Mark 5:21-23 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.
And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,
And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.

2. Jesus goes with him and as he does many people follow and crowd around him.

a. Mark 5:24 And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.

3. On the way he encountered a woman who had a hemorrhage of blood for 12 years and had spent all her money on doctors and was not healed.

a. Luke 8:43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,

4. During the 12 years of going to doctors, not only were they unable to help her, she only grew worse.

a. Mark 5:26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,

5. When she heard of Jesus she came up from the rear of the crowd saying to herself, “If I may but touch his garment, I shall be healed.

a. Mark 5:27, 28 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.

b. Matthew 9:20, 21 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:
For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.

c. An interesting fact

1). hem [2899 * kraspedon][Thayer: the extremity or prominent part of a thing, edge, skirt, margin, the fringe of a garment…a tassel, tuft: the Jews had such appendages attached to their mantles to remind them of the law.

d. This hem is referring to the prayer shawl that Jewish men wear which was commanded by the Mosaic law.

1). Numbers 15:37-40 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue:
And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:
That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God.

e. Life And Times Of Jesus The Messiah, Alfred Edersheim: “But the upper garment which Jesus wore would be either the so called Goltha, or most likely, the Tallith. Both the Goltha and the Tallith, were provided, on the four borders, with the so call Tsitsith, or fringes. These were attached to the four corners of the outer dress, in supposed fulfillment of the command  in Numbers 15:38-41; Deuteronomy 22:12.”

g. So the border or hem that she touched was really Jesus’ prayer shawl.

6. When she touched the border of his garment the hemorrhaging stopped and she knew she was healed.

a. Mark 5:29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.

7. Jesus immediately knew that power had gone out from him and turned around and asked who touched his clothes?

a. Mark 5:30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?

8. When all denied touching him, his disciples said to him, Lord everyone’s touching you, and you ask who is touching you? Jesus of course was referring to a different kind of touch.

a. Luke 8:45, 46 And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.

b. In Mark’s Gospel he reports that after the disciples puzzled remark Jesus scanned the crowd to see who it was who touched his clothes.

1). Mark 5:32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.

c. Both Mark and Luke record that the woman knowing she was not hid from Jesus came trembling and fell down before him and told him everything.

1). Mark 5:33  But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.

2). Luke 8:47  And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.

a). The Scripture reveals that as Jesus was scanning the crowd the same Holy Ghost that revealed that healing power had left Him also revealed who the person was that had touched him.

b). The Scripture does not mention a time factor in this event but this woman could have given her whole testimony including the 12 year struggle she had. She was so terrified she was trembling.

d. Why she was trembling she made Jesus unclean.

9. Jesus replied to her to go in peace and all three gospel writers declared that Jesus said “her faith” is what made her whole.

a. Mark 5:34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

10. The next thing that occurs is that while Jesus is speaking someone comes from Jairus’ house and tells him his daughter has died.

a. Mark 5:35 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?

b. Luke 8:49 Luke 8:49 While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.

c. I believe the Scriptural evidence points to the conclusion that Jesus did not hear what was told to Jairus because Scripture reports that Jairus himself told Jesus.

1). Matthew 9:18 While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.

d. Matthew’s account does not report any verbal response from the Lord to the knowledge of Jairus’ daughter’s death, but Mark and Luke do.

1). Mark 5:36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
2). Luke 8:50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.

a). In both accounts it is thee Lord answering Jairus.

11. From this point on Jesus allowed only Peter James and John and Jairus to follow him.

a. Mark 5:37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.

1). The reason for this was to remove all the doubters and unbelievers because they would hinder the Lord’s ability to raise the little girl from the dead.

a). Mark 6:1-6  And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him.
And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.
But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.
And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.
And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.

12. When Jesus arrived at Jairus’ house there was of course much mourning going on.

a. Mark 5:38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.

b. Matthew 9:23 And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,

13. Jesus when he went into the house he again would only allow Peter James and John to follow him in.

a. Luke 8:51 And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.

14. Inside the house he was met with the professional mourners.

a. Matthew 9:23 And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,

b. Mark 5:38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.

c. Luke 8:51  And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.

15. Jesus said to the mourners that the little girl was not dead but was only asleep.

a. Matthew 9:24 He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn

b. Mark 5:39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
c. Luke 8:52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.

16. They all mocked him.

a. Mark 5:40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.

b. Luke 8:53 And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.

17. Jesus then put everybody out of the house except the father and mother and the three apostles and went into the room where the girl was.

a. Mark 5:40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.

b. Matthew 9:25 But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose.

c. Luke 8:54  And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.

18. Jesus took the girls hand and commanded her to come alive and she came alive.

a. Mark 5:41, 42  And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.

b. Luke 8:55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.
