Judges 3:16

Judges 3:16

But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

1. “But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length…”

1). The fact this dagger or sword had two edges is significant. Notice the similarity with other verses.

a). Psalm 149:5, 6 Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
149:6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand;

b). Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

c). Revelation 1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two edged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

2). Ehud’s sword is a type of the word of God. This whole passage about the judge Ehud is an exhortation to believers to use the word of God in their daily lives against the enemy of our souls. Notice what Ehud said to Eglon as he delivered the sword into him.

a). Judges 3:20, 21 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
3:21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:

3). Jesus used the word of God in his battling the temptations of satan, during his earthly ministry.

a). Matthew 4:1-10 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
4:2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
4:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written,  He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
4:9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

4). The sword of the Spirit is part of our spiritual armor God has provided us.

a). Ephesians 6:10-18 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

2. “...and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.”

1 Samuel 3:20



1 Samuel 3:20

And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.

a. NLT: And all Israel, from Dan in the north to Beersheba in the south, knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the LORD.

b. NIV: And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the LORD.

c. YLT: and all Israel know, from Dan even unto Beer-Sheba, that Samuel is established for a prophet to Jehovah.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord.

1. “And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba…”

1). Because Samuel was diligent in his obedience to the Lord and speaking only what the LORD spoke to him, Samuel’s spiritual growth and reputation was evident to all in Israel. I believe it is a spiritual principle that as we give ourselves completely to the things of God our spiritual growth will be evident to those around us.

a). 1 Timothy 4:15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

b). profiting [4297 * prokope] [Zodhiates: A going forward, used only figuratively of progress, advancement, furtherance, either for good or evil.]
c). The main point being spoken here is spiritual growth. This is the same point being pushed in all the uses of the term “prosperous” in Joshua 1:8 and Psalm 1:1-3.

2. “…knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.”

e. of the LORD [Strong: 3068 * Yhovah yeh-ho-vaw' from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.]

1). Samuel was elevated to a national prophet. This of course happen over time. During his years as prophet he had a regular teaching circuit all through Israel.

a). 1 Samuel 7:15-17 And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
7:16 And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.
7:17 And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the LORD.

2 Corinthians 9:6


2 Corinthians 9:6

But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

a. NLT: Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop.

b. NIV: Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

c. YLT: And this: He who is sowing sparingly, sparingly also shall reap; and he who is sowing in blessings, in blessings also shall reap;

1). Some scholars believe that Paul in 2 Corinthians 9:6, 7 was loosely referring to the Septuagint translation of Proverbs 22:8, 9. Incidentally, the Septuagint translation is the only place where we find wording that resembles Paul’s phrase in 2 Corinthians 9:7, “God loveth a cheerful giver.”

a). Proverbs 22:8, 9 [Septuagint] He that sows wickedness shall reap troubles; and shall fully receive the punishment of his deeds. God loves a cheerful and liberal man; but a man shall fully prove the folly of his works.
22:9 He that has pity on the poor shall himself be maintained; for he has given of his own bread to the poor. He that gives liberally secures victory and honour; but he takes away the life of them that possess them.  

2). Paul addressed sowing and reaping only three times in his letters to the churches, but within those three times, everything in the principle of sowing and reaping, seedtime and harvest is covered in references, such as in Galatians.

a). Galatians 6:7-10 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
6:8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
6:10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

3). One must not forget that the sower, the giver must have a mindset of a harvest as he sows, gives.

a). 1 Corinthians 9:7-10 Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
9:8 Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?
9:9 For it is written in the law of Moses, thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?
9:10 Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.

4). This truth is not limited to giving financially, every thought word and deed we engage in is also included in sowing and reaping.
