2 Samuel 21:16

And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.

a. NLT: Ishbi-benob was a descendant of the giants; his bronze spearhead weighed more than seven pounds, and he was armed with a new sword. He had cornered David and was about to kill him.

b. NIV: And Ishbi-Benob, one of the descendants of Rapha, whose bronze spearhead weighed three hundred shekels and who was armed with a new sword, said he would kill David.

c. Young’s Literal translation: and Ishbi-Benob, who is among the children of the giant -- the weight of his spear is three hundred shekels weight of brass, and he is girded with a new one -- speaketh of smiting David,

d. Amplified Bible: Ishbi-benob, who was of the sons of the giants, the weight of whose spear was 300 shekels of bronze, was girded with a new sword, and thought to kill David.

e. Septuagint: And Jesbi, who was of the progeny of Rapha, and the head of whose spear was three hundred shekels of brass in weight, who also was girt with a club, even he thought to smite David.

1. “And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant…”

a. Ishbibenob [3430 * Yishbow b-Nob] [Strong: his dwelling (is) in Nob; Jishbo-be-Nob, a Philistine:--Ishbi-benob (from the margin).]

b. of the sons [3211 * yaliyd] [Strong: born:--((home-))born, child, son.]

c. the giant [7497 * rapha’] [Strong: a giant:--giant, Rapha, Rephaim(-s).]

1). The passage 2 Samuel 21:15-22 mentions four giants who were progeny to the giant in Gath.

a). 2 Samuel 21:22 These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

2). Dake: The last five giants slain. These 5 giants were brothers. In 2 Samuel 21:22 it states the four mentioned in that passage were brothers; and in 2 Samuel 21:19 and 1 Chronicles 20:5 it makes it clear that they were brothers of Goliath, who made up the 5.

a). Sippai (1 Chronicles 20:4). Called Saph (2 Samuel 21:18).

b). Lahmi, brother of Goliath (1 Chronicles 20:5; 2 Samuel 21:19).

c). The giant with 6 fingers and toes on each hand and foot (1 Chronicles 20:6, 7; 2 Samuel 21:20, 21).

d). Ishbi-benob (2 Samuel 21:16, 17).

e). Goliath (1 Samuel 17).

2.  “the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight…”

d. hundred [3967 * me'ah; or metyah] [Strong: properly, a primitive numeral; a hundred; also as a multiplicative and a fraction:--hundred((-fold), -th), + sixscore.]

e. shekels [5178 * nechosheth] [Strong: copper, hence, something made of that metal, i.e. coin, a fetter; figuratively, base (as compared with gold or silver):--brasen, brass, chain, copper, fetter (of brass), filthiness, steel.]

1). The NLT correctly renders it as over 7 pounds.

3. “…he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.”

1). The NIV, Young’s and the Stone Edition both read that the giant was declaring or telling all he was going to kill David. This is similar to what happened in David’s encounter with Goliath.

a). 1 Samuel 17:42-47 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

17:43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

17:44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.

17:45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

17:46 This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

17:47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands.
