Hebrews 7:2
To
whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King
of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is King of peace;
a. NLT: Then Abraham took a tenth
of all he had captured in battle and gave it to Melchizedek. The name
Melchizedek means “king of justice,” and king of Salem means “king of peace.”
b. NIV: And Abraham gave a tenth of
everything. First, the name Melchizedec means “king of righteousness”; then
also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.”
c. YLT: to whom also a tenth of all
did Abraham divide, (first, indeed, being interpreted, 'King of righteousness,'
and then also, King of Salem, which is, King of Peace,)
d. Amplified Bible Classic: And
Abraham gave to him a tenth portion of all [the spoil]. He is primarily, as his
name when translated indicates, king of righteousness, and then he is also king
of Salem, which means king of peace.
e. Worrell Translation: To whom also
Abraham apportioned a tenth of all (first, indeed, interpreted as King
of Righteousness” and then also “King of Salem” which is king of peace;
f. Wuest Translation: Abraham
divided a tenth part of all; the first designation on the one hand being
interpreted means king of righteousness, and then, on the other hand [he was]
also king of Salem which is king of peace.

“To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all…”
a. To whom [Strong: 3739 hos hos,
including feminine he hay, and neuter ho ho probably a primary word (or
perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative)
pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what,
which, who(-m, -se), etc.]
b. also [Strong: 2532 kai kahee
apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative
force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or
composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even,
for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
c. Abraham [Strong: 11 Abraam
ab-rah-am' of Hebrew origin (85); Abraham, the Hebrew
patriarch:--Abraham.]
d. gave [Strong: 3307 merizo
mer-id'-zo from 3313; to part, i.e. (literally) to apportion, bestow,
share, or (figuratively) to disunite, differ:--deal, be difference between,
distribute, divide, give participle.]
e. a tenth part [Strong: 1181 dekate
dek-at'-ay feminine of 1182; a tenth, i.e. as a percentage or
(technically) tithe:--tenth (part), tithe.]
f. of [Strong: 575 apo apo'
a primary particle; "off," i.e. away (from something near), in various
senses (of place, time, or relation; literal or figurative):--(X here-)after,
ago, at, because of, before, by (the space of), for(-th), from, in, (out) of,
off, (up-)on(-ce), since, with. In composition (as a prefix) it usually denotes
separation, departure, cessation, completion, reversal, etc.]
g. all [Strong: 3956 pas pas
including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any,
every, the whole:--all (manner of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, +
ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever,
whole, whosoever.]
1). There are those in the Body of
Christ who believe that Melchizidec is a theophany, a pre-incarnation
appearance of Christ. The comparisons that Scripture gives in Hebrews 7:2, 3
are impressive, comparing him to a type of Christ. My personal belief is that
Melchizidec was either a theophany of Christ or a godly priest during the time
of Abraham. The following time lines are remarkable in what they reveal as to
who lived when Shem was still alive. There is another theory that Shem is
Melchizidec, because Shem was still alive when this event occurred. I do not
share this view at all, but the timeline is fascinating and enlightening. Shem
was 98 years old after the flood. His first son was born two years after the
flood. He lived a total of 600 years, 502 of them after the flood, Genesis
11:10, 11. If we assume that Abram left right after Terah’s death at 205 years
old and we subtract 75 from 205 we find that Abram was born when Terah was 130
years old not 70. Which means Abram was born 352 years after the flood. Shem at
this time would be 450 years old. When we add up the 175 total years of
Abrahams life, in Genesis 25:7 and add them to the 450 years of Shem at Abrams
birth we find that Abraham was 150 years old at Shem’s death, and Abraham lived
another 25 years before he died. Shem was 550 years old when Isaac was born,
Genesis 21:5; and he died 10 years before Jacob and Esau was born, Genesis
25:26. After the flood, Shem seems to fall away from the Biblical record,
hardly being mentioned at all. I think this is significant, in the fact that
Shem survived the flood and did not have a prominent effect in the after flood
culture, even though he lived for another 502 years after the flood. It is
sobering to me to know that for 150 years Abraham and Shem were contemporary
with one another and that Abraham has the prominence, not Shem. The Biblical
record in Genesis 14 shows Abraham went to war with Shem’s descendants through
Elam. It is highly probable that since Shem was alive then, Elam his son and
founder of the city/state Elam was also alive. Jewish tradition teaches that
Chedorlaomer was indeed Elam, son of Shem, and Amraphel was Nimrod. See notes
in Genesis 14:1. As we shall see Christ Jesus is a High Priest after the order
of Melchizedek, and Melchizedek is a type of Christ.
2). There is much intriguing
mystery surrounding the person of Melchizedek. All the reliable information we
have is in the Scriptures and that is sufficient. One of the reasons that
Abraham gave a tithe to Melchizedec was that he honored his Priesthood.
