Titus 3:5

 

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

1.“Not by works of righteousness which we have done…”

1). Our salvation is not of our works.

2. “…but according to his mercy he saved us…”

d. his [Strong: 846. autos ow-tos' from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]


d. mercy [1656 * eleos] [Strong: of uncertain affinity; compassion (human or divine, especially active):--(+ tender) mercy.

 

e. [he] saved [Strong: 4982. sozo sode'-zo from a primary sos (contraction for obsolete saos, "safe"); to save, i.e. deliver or protect (literally or figuratively):--heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole.] [Zodhiates: to save, deliver, make whole, preserve safe from danger, loss, destruction. Sozo occurs fifty four times in the Gospels…Of the instances where sozo is used fourteen relate to deliverance from disease or demon possession, in twenty instances, the inference is to the rescue of physical life from some impending peril or instant death; the remaining twenty times, the reference is to spiritual salvation.]

 

1). In Acts 4 it is used twice in the same passage to describe bodily healing and salvation.

 

a). Acts 4:8-12  Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,

4:9 If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole;

4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.

4:11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.

4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

 

b). The Greek word sozo is translated “made whole” in Acts 4:9 and “saved” in Acts 4:12. The first instance is clearly referring to bodily healing and the second to salvation in general.

 

2). Later in Acts the Greek word sozo is translated “healed.”

 

a). Acts 14:8-10  And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked:

14:9 The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,

14:10 Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.

 

3). Because of the relationship between the Scriptural terms “saved” and “salvation”  the note in the Scofield Reference Bible under Romans 1:16 is very enlightening: “The Hebrew and Greek words for salvation imply the ideas of deliverance, safety, preservation, healing and soundness. Salvation is the great inclusive word of the Gospel, gathering into itself all the redemptive acts and processes…”

 

4). Our salvation is only because of God’s mercy and grace.

 

a). Lamentations 3:22, 23 It is the of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

3:23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

 

b). Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:


f. us [Strong: 2248. hemas hay-mas' accusative case plural of 1473; us:--our, us, we.]

 

3. “…by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.”

 

a. by [Strong: 1223. dia dee-ah' a primary preposition denoting the channel of an act; through (in very wide applications, local, causal, or occasional):--after, always, among, at, to avoid, because of (that), briefly, by, for (cause) ... fore, from, in, by occasion of, of, by reason of, for sake, that, thereby, therefore, X though, through(-out), to, wherefore, with (-in). In composition it retains the same general importance.]


b. [the] washing [3067 * loutron] [Strong: a bath, i.e. (figuratively), baptism:--washing.] [Thayer: bathing, bath, the act of bathing.] [Zodhiates: The washing mentioned can easily be understood metaphorically. Regeneration itself is an operation portrayed in Scripture as effecting a spiritual cleansing (Ezekiel 36:25, 26; John 3:5; 1 Corinthians 6:11). In addition, since the expression “washing of regeneration” stands parallel to “renewal of the Holy Ghost”, it is more natural to assume the force of the genitive is also parallel. The genitive of the latter phrase is certainly subjective. Hence, the words “washing of regeneration” refer to the washing produced by regeneration.”]

 

1). Don Costello: The next Greek word translated “regeneration” will certainly bear out that this is not talking about baptism.

 

c. regeneration [3824 * paliggenesia; palin-again; genesis-generation] [Zodhiates: Regeneration, restoration, renovation, rebirth.] [Strong: (spiritual) rebirth (the state or the act), i.e. (figuratively) spiritual renovation; specially, Messianic restoration:--regeneration.]

 

1). This is the new birth, the born again experience Jesus was referring to when he was speaking with Nicodemus in John 3.

 

a). John 3:3-8 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?

3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

3:8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is everyone that is born of the Spirit.

 

2). When we become “born again” we are “in Christ” and our spirit is recreated by the Holy Ghost.

 

a). 2 Corinthians 5:17, 18 Therefore if any man be in Christ he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

 

a). The Amplified translation renders this “a new creature altogether, a new creation…” This is the “washing of regeneration”, the new birth, being born again.

 

c. and [Strong: 2532. kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]


d. renewing [Strong: 342. anakainosis an-ak-ah'-ee-no-sis from 341; renovation:--renewing.] [Zodhiates: a renewing or a renovation which makes a person different than in the past, anakainosis; ana-again; kainoo-to make new ]  [Thayer: a renewal, renovation, complete change for the better.]

 

1). The “washing of regeneration”, the “new birth” is accomplished by the Holy Ghost when we repent of our sins and believe God raised Jesus from the dead and declare Jesus to be our Lord.

 

a). Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.


e. [of the] Holy [Strong: 40. hagios hag'-ee-os from hagos (an awful thing) (compare 53, 2282); sacred (physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated):--(most) holy (one, thing), saint.]


f. Ghost [Strong: 4151. pneuma pnyoo'-mah from 4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit:--ghost, life, spirit(-ual, -ually), mind.
