1 Thessalonians 3:2

 

And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:

1. “And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God…”

 

a. 1). I think it is interesting that Paul mentions Timothy here and not Silas, even though Silas was sent along with Timothy, and Silas was a well known and experienced leader in the Jerusalem church before Timothy received Christ. At the time of the Jerusalem council in Acts 15, Silas was already and leader in the Jerusalem church.

 

a). Silas  is described as among the “…chief men among the brethren”, in Acts 15:22

 

b). Silas is described in Acts 15:32 as being a prophet.

 

2. “…and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ…”

c. fellowlabourer [Strong: 4904 sunergos soon-er-gos' from a presumed compound of 4862 and the base of 2041; a co-laborer, i.e. coadjutor:--companion in labour, (fellow-)helper(-labourer, -worker), labourer together with, workfellow.]

3. “…to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:”

h. concerning [Strong: 4012 . peri per-ee' from the base of 4008; properly, through (all over), i.e. around; figuratively with respect to; used in various applications, of place, cause or time (with the genitive case denoting the subject or occasion or superlative point; with the accusative case the locality, circuit, matter, circumstance or general period):--(there-)about, above, against, at, on behalf of, X and his company, which concern, (as) concerning, for, X how it will go with, ((there-, where-)) of, on, over, pertaining (to), for sake, X (e-)state, (as) touching, (where-)by (in), with. k. faith [Strong: 4102 pistis pis'-tis from 3982; persuasion, i.e. credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly, constancy in such profession; by extension, the system of religious (Gospel) truth itself:--assurance, belief, believe, faith, fidelity.]

 

1). Paul sent Timothy back to the Thessalonians to set and place them firmly and comfort them in their faith. The message that Timothy ministered to them consisted partly of verses 3 & 4 of 1 Thessalonians 3.

 

a). I Thessalonians 3:3, 4 That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.

3:4 For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.

 

2). The Thessalonian church, just like the Philippian church was founded in the midst of persecution, either to Paul or to the members of the church themselves. In Thessalonica, unbelieving Jews caused a turmoil throughout the whole city and raised up a mob and raided the house of one of the new believers looking for Paul and Silas. When they failed to find Paul they apprehended Jason and some other believers and brought charges against them before the city court. These believers were released only after they had posted bail.

 

a). Acts 17:5-9 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

17:6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

17:7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

17:8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

17:9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

 

3). Timothy’s message was for them not to be moved by these afflictions. Do not let these events cause you to throw away your faith. Before these things happened Paul had warned them that persecution was coming and of course it did, so he was exhorting them not to be moved by them.
