Hebrews 1:3
Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:
a. NLT: The Son radiates God's own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.
b. NIV: The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

1. “Who being the brightness of his glory…”

1). Jesus reflected the light of the Father just as believers are to reflect the light of the Son.
a). John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
2). The glory of the Father was grace and truth but also the miraculous power Jesus demonstrated.
a). John 1:11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
b). 2 Corinthians 4:3, 4 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
3). Institute Of Creation Research Daily Devotional 12/7/13 This verse constitutes one of Scripture’s most magnificent declarations of the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us examine the phrase “the brightness of his glory.” The word for “brightness” is used only this one time in the Bible and means, literally, “out-radiating.” The word picture conveyed is of the energy overflow from the sun. The sun constitutes a tremendous generator of energy, more than adequate to sustain all processes on Earth. However, these energies would be utterly useless for any such noble purpose if they could not somehow be transmitted from sun to Earth. They are transmitted, however, through the remarkable radiant energy known as sunlight, or solar radiation. It is this figure which the writer is using. As the sun’s rays are to the sun itself, so is Christ to the Godhead. He is “the light of the world” (John 8:12). It is He whose “goings forth” have been “everlasting” (Micah 5:2). His glorified countenance is “as the sun shineth in his strength” (Revelation 1:16). The Lord Jesus Christ is the life-giving radiation of the ineffable glory of the eternal One, from whose face one day the very heaven and earth will flee away (Revelation 20:11). “But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings [or ‘outspreadings’]” (Malachi 4:2). And through this One who mediates God to us, we can enter boldly into His presence. “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6). 2. “…and the express image of his person…”

b. the express image [Strong: 5481 charakter khar-ak-tare' from the same as 5482; a graver (the tool or the person), i.e. (by implication) engraving (("character"), the figure stamped, i.e. an exact copy or (figuratively) representation):--express image.] [Thayer: the instrument used for engraving or carving, the mark stamped upon that instrument or wrought out on it, a mark or figure burned in (Lev. 13:28) or stamped on, an impression, the exact expression (the image) of any person or thing, marked likeness, precise reproduction in every respect, i.e facsimile.]
1). This is the Greek word we get the English word “character”.

1). Looking at this part of the verse invokes a number of verses also.
a). John 14:8-11 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?
14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

1). The New Testament teaches that Jesus, the Second Person of the Triune Godhead created all things in the universe.

1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
2). The Bible teaches that the LORD God created everything by the breath of his mouth.
a). Psalm 33:6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
b). And God said: Genesis 1:3-31
3). The text in Hebrews 1:3 says that that same word that created all things now upholds all things by His word.
4. “…when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:”

1). After Jesus paid for our redemption he sat down on the right hand of the Father, the Majesty on high. This is one of the 16 times Psalm 110:1 is either quoted or alluded to in the New testament. Psalm 110:1 is the most quoted Old Testament verse in the New Testament. One of the reasons I believe is because when Christ Jesus sat down at the right hand of the Father, it was then the Holy Ghost was given and so also the beginning of the implantation of the new Covenant. See notes in Psalm 110:1.
