Psalm 127:1

Psalm 127:1

Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

1. “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it…”

a. Note the co-laboring: the LORD builds and they (the husband and wife build.)

1). 2 Corinthians 6:1 We then as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.

2). 1 Corinthians 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

b. vain [7723 * shav’][Strong: in the sense of desolating; evil (as destructive), literally (ruin) or morally (especially guile); figuratively idolatry (as false, subjective), uselessness (as deceptive, objective; also adverbially, in vain):--false(-ly), lie, lying, vain, vanity.][Gesenius: evil, wickedness, iniquity, falsehood, emptiness, vanity.]

c. Vain in Psalm 127:1 is referring to trying to build the house without His help (His grace.) In 2 Corinthians 6:1 coupled with 1 Corinthians 15:10 hints to do nothing with the grace (ability) He has given us is to receive it in vain.

d. Paul’s statement concerning the word of God and grace is very applicable here.

1). Acts 20:32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

e. Glory to God, His word is full of grace! Want more grace? Get into His word.

1). 2 Peter 1:2-4 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

2). Through His word we get built up with grace through revelation that enables us to access the promises and be a partaker of his divine nature.
