Haggai 2:7


And I will shake all nations and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.

1). Amplified Bible Note: It is with great reluctance that we refrain from capitalizing the word “desire” here and making the phrase point directly to the Messiah, as has been the accepted interpretation through many centuries until modern times. But the verb “shall come” is plural, and as many commentators agree, refers to the most desired treasures that all nations will bring as gifts to adorn the temple to which the Messiah will one day have come.

1. “And I will shake all nations and the desire of all nations shall come…”

1). Many scholars, teachers, and believers interpret this as the Redeemer of mankind, Christ Jesus, because that is what their heart truly desires. Yet the context of Haggai 2:7, 8 points to material wealth.


e. 2). In this verse it is only mentioned that the nations are shaken and not the heavens, because of that it could be that the prophet is referring to a different shaking and not the shaking of the previous verse.


2. “…and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.”

e. with glory [Strong: 3519 kabowd kaw-bode' rarely kabod {kaw-bode'};  from 3513; properly, weight, but only figuratively in a good sense, splendor or copiousness:--glorious(-ly), glory, honour(-able).]


f. saith [Strong: 559 'amar aw-mar'; a primitive root; to say (used with great latitude):--answer, appoint, avouch, bid, boast self, call, certify, challenge, charge, + (at the, give) command(-ment), commune, consider, declare, demand, X desire, determine, X expressly, X indeed, X intend, name, X plainly, promise, publish, report, require, say, speak (against, of), X still, X suppose, talk, tell, term, X that is, X think, use (speech), utter, X verily, X yet.]


g. [the] LORD [Strong: 3068 Yhovah yeh-ho-vaw'; from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.]


h. [of] hosts [Strong: 6635 tsaba' tsaw-baw' or (feminine) tsbadah {tseb-aw-aw'}; from 6633; a mass of persons (or figuratively, things), especially reg. organized for war (an army); by implication, a campaign, literally or figuratively (specifically, hardship, worship):--appointed time, (+) army, (+) battle, company, host, service, soldiers, waiting upon, war(-fare).]


1). It appears from the context that “the glory” the LORD is referring to is material wealth, the outward adornment of the temple, but deep inside me I cannot limit it to just material “glory” especially in light of the powerful presence of God in Solomon’s temple and also that we know that Christ Jesus, God manifest in the flesh would at a later date visit this very temple. This whole discussion is because there were those building this Temple who had seen the previous Temple and the comparison caused them to cry in disappointment.


a). Haggai 2:3 Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? And how do ye see it now? Is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?


b). Ezra 3:12, 13 But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud for joy. 3:13 So that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people: for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off.


2). This passage is one of more than a few that are used to teach that a great transfer of wealth will occur at the end of the age. The two big questions are to whom will the wealth be given and is it really at the end of this age. In all of the following verses the context is clearly during the Millennial reign of Christ or during the Perfect Age after the Millennial reign.


a). Zechariah 14:14 And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the heathen round about shall be gathered together, gold, and silver, and apparel, in great abundance.

 

b). Isaiah 60:9-11 Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the LORD thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee. 

60:10 And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favor have I had mercy on thee. 

60:11 Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that kings may be brought. 


c). Psalm 68:29-32 Because of thy temple at Jerusalem shall kings bring presents unto thee.

68:30 Rebuke the company of spearmen, the multitude of the bulls, with the calves of the people, till every one submit himself with pieces of silver: scatter thou the people that delight in war.

68:31 Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God.

68:32 Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth; O sing praises unto the Lord; Selah:


d). Psalm 72:8-11 He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.

72:9 They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.

72:10 The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.

72:11 Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.


e). Isaiah 61:4-6 And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations. 

61:5 And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers. 

61:6 But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.


2). The context of this bringing of wealth to Jerusalem in the Prophets is revealed in Revelation as specifically after the New Heavens and New Earth are established by God.


a). Revelation 21:23-26 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.

21:24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.

21:25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.

21:26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.


3). To read the Church age into these passages is ridiculous.
