Hebrews 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarded of them that diligently seek him.
a. NLT: And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.
b. NIV: And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

1). This phrase does not say that faith pleases God, it is saying that it’s impossible to please him without it. Two people can do the same scriptural command. Both do it, one does it in faith, the other does it also, but not in faith. Only one has pleased God.
a). Romans 9:30-32 “What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
9:31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, have not attained to the law of righteousness.
9:32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
b). Jeremiah 17:5 Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.

1). Believing in God is critical in this equation, but it can’t be by itself. Most people believe in God, but they are not going to heaven. Indeed, the devil believes in God.
a). James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils believe and tremble.

1). Rick Renner: The phrase “diligently seek” in Hebrews 11:6 is taken from the Greek word ekzeteo, and it carries an entire range of power-packed meanings. It means to zealously seek for something with all of one’s heart, strength, and might. It presents the picture of one who seeks something so passionately and determinedly that he literally exhausts all his power in his search.

a). Genesis 15:1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
2). Our inheritance in Jesus is spoken of as a reward.
