1 Kings 18:21
And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

1). Elijah told the people they were wavering between serving God or Baal. Jesus said no man can serve two masters, they will ultimately serve one or the other.
a). Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
b). The Jewish people because they were wavering were actually serving Baal. As Christians in Covenant with God we should not waver in our faith when we pray. Not only will we not receive from God what we ask, but James goes on to say that our whole relationship with God, our whole life will be unstable.
(1) James 1:5-8 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
1:6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
1:7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
2). Unstable Christians are more susceptible to being led astray into sin.

1). The contrast between this moment and the moment when the fire of God consumed the sacrifice needs to be addressed. Here we have Elijah, a prophet of God, who up to this point was in hiding as were all the true followers of God, addressing the people and they do not respond because they are not convinced. Up to this point Jezebel had killed some of the true prophets of God. So Elijah coming out of hiding to challenge these false prophets could not get an Amen, out of these people. Yet after the fire of God fell and God demonstrated who was the one true God, then the people responded. This is why we need the full gospel with signs and wonders, not just words.
a). 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
2:2 For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
2:3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
2:5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
