1 Kings 18:36

And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

a. ASV: And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

b. YLT: And it cometh to pass, at the going up of the evening-present, that Elijah the prophet cometh nigh and saith, 'Jehovah, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, to-day let it be known that Thou art God in Israel, and I Thy servant, that by Thy word I have done the whole of these things;

1. “And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice…”

a. And it came to pass [Strong: 1961  hayah haw-yaw a primitive root (Compare 1933); to exist, i.e. be or become, come to pass (always emphatic, and not a mere copula or auxiliary):--beacon, X altogether, be(-come), accomplished, committed, like), break, cause, come (to pass), do, faint, fall, + follow, happen, X have, last, pertain, quit (one-)self, require, X use.]

c. [of the evening] sacrifice 4503 minchâh, min-khaw'; from an unused root meaning to apportion, i.e. bestow; a donation; euphemistically, tribute; specifically a sacrificial offering (usually bloodless and voluntary):—gift, oblation, (meat) offering, present, sacrifice.]

1). The mention of the offering of the evening sacrifice with the timing of this offering is very interesting, when coupled with the Jewish understanding of the morning and evening sacrifice listed in Exodus 29:38-46. Below is a Jewish commentary of the Exodus passage.

a). Stone Edition, Chumash, p.480, 481; Note for verses 38-46. “…Haamek Davar notes that this passage ends by emphasizing that the Tent of Meeting will be the place where God will “meet” with Moses and the nation, and that it will be the place where God will rest His Presence upon Israel. In the Torah’s other passage about the tamid (numbers 28:1-8), there is no mention of the Tent. On the other hand, that passage describes the offering as My [i.e., God’s food, a reference that does not appear here. Based on these differences, Haamek Davar comments that the tamid-offering in the Wilderness had the unique function of cementing the closeness between God and Israel, while the tamid-offerings in Eretz Israel—My Food—were to bring prosperity to the nation, since food is a metaphor for wealth. The suggestion is that if Israel dedicates its own wealth to God’s service. He will reward it with even greater riches.”

2). This offering that Elijah will offer takes place at the time of the evening sacrifice and although it technically is in Israel, it is offered in the wilderness, not in the Tent. As we shall see the effect will be to cement a revival in Israel toward God.The Psalmists writes that the lifting up of our hands in prayer is comparable to the evening sacrifice.

a). Psalm 141:2  Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

3). Also that the lifting up of our hands is a way to bless God.

a). Psalm 63:4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.

4). Likewise under the New Covenant we need to know and understand of the spiritual effect of the lifting up of our hands in prayer.

a). 1 Timothy 2:8 I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

2. “…that Elijah the prophet came near, and said…”

a. [that] Elijah [Strong: 452 ʼÊlîyâh, ay-lee-yaw'; or prolonged אֵלִיָּהוּ ʼÊlîyâhûw; from H410 and H3050; God of Jehovah; Elijah, the name of the famous prophet and of two other Israelites:—Elijah, Eliah.]

b. [the] prophet [Strong: 5030 nâbîyʼ, naw-bee'; from H5012; a prophet or (generally) inspired man:—prophecy, that prophesy, prophet.]

c. came near [Strong: 5066 nâgash, naw-gash'; a primitive root; to be or come (causatively, bring) near (for any purpose); euphemistically, to lie with a woman; as an enemy, to attack; religious to worship; causatively, to present; figuratively, to adduce an argument; by reversal, to stand back:—(make to) approach (nigh), bring (forth, hither, near), (cause to) come (hither, near, nigh), give place, go hard (up), (be, draw, go) near (nigh), offer, overtake, present, put, stand.]

d. [and] said [Strong: 559 ʼâmar, aw-mar'; a primitive root; to say (used with great latitude):—answer, appoint, avouch, bid, boast self, call, certify, challenge, charge, (at the, give) command(-ment), commune, consider, declare, demand, × desire, determine, ×expressly, × indeed, × intend, name, × plainly, promise, publish, report, require, say, speak (against, of), × still, × suppose, talk, tell, term, × that is, × think, use (speech), utter, × verily, × yet.]

3. “...LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel …”

a. LORD [Strong: 3068 Yᵉhôvâh, yeh-ho-vaw'; from H1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jeho-vah, Jewish national name of God:—Jehovah, the Lord.]

b. God [Strong: 430  ʼĕlôhîym, el-o-heem'; plural of H433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative:—angels, × exceeding, God (gods) (-dess, -ly), × (very) great, judges, × mighty.]

c. [of] Abraham [Strong: 85 ʼAbrâhâm, ab-raw-hawm'; contracted from H1 and an unused root (probably meaning to be populous); father of a multitude; Abraham, the later name of Abram:—Abraham.]

d. Isaac [Strong: 3327 Yitschâq, yits-khawk'; from H6711; laughter (i.e. mochery); Jitschak (or Isaac), son of Abraham:—Isaac.]

e. [and of] Israel [Strong: 3478 Yisrâʼêl, yis-raw-ale'; from H8280 and H410; he will rule as God; Jisraël, a symbolical name of Jacob; also (typically) of his posterity:—Israel.]

f. 4. “…and that I am thy servant…”

1). Much of what I know of this passage of Scripture, 1 Kings 17, 18 I learned at a seminar taught by brother Buddy Bell, an associate of Church on the Move, pastored by Willie George. Buddy Bell came to our Church and did an all day seminar on the ministry of helps and this passage was part of his text. All through the day brother Bell stressed very strongly the necessity of us being “servants” of the Lord. I remember hims emphasizing that when Elijah was in prayer to God at the very moment God would show himself ‘Almighty’ in this passage, Elijah didn’t say I am thy great prophet or I am the prophet. No he said “I am thy servant”.

b). Philippians 1:1  Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.

5. “...and that I have done all these things at thy word.”

a. 1). “All these things” include everything from 1 Kings 18:1 to 1 Kings 18:37. Everything, including the showing of himself to Ahab, the calling of the false prophets and all Israel to Mt. Carmel, even the manner in which the altar was rebuilt and the dressing of the sacrifice to the LORD was all done at the word of the LORD to Elijah.

e.
