1 Thessalonians 4:17
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
a. NLT: Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.
b. NIV: After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
c. YLT: then we who are living, who are remaining over, together with them shall be caught away in clouds to meet the Lord in air, and so always with the Lord we shall be;
d. Amplified Bible Classic: Then we, the living ones who remain [on the earth], shall simultaneously be caught up along with [the resurrected dead] in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so always (through the eternity of the eternities) we shall be with the Lord!
e. Worrell Translation: After that we the living who are left over, will be caught up together with them in clouds, into the air, to meet the Lord; and so shall we be always be with the Lord.

e. and remain [Strong: 4035 perileipo per-ee-li'-po from 4012 and 3007; to leave all around, i.e. (passively) survive:--remain.]
f. [shall be] caught up [726 harpazo har-pad'-zo from a derivative of 138; to seize (in various applications):--catch (away, up), pluck, pull, take (by force).] [Thayer: to seize, carry off by force, to seize on, claim for one's self eagerly, to snatch out or away.] [Zodhiates: Literally, to seize upon with force, to rob;…It denotes an open act of violence…generally [it] denotes robbery of another’s property, it is not exclusively used thus, but sometimes used generally meaning forcibly to seize upon, snatch away to take to oneself.]
1). The use of the word “harpazo” to describe the rapture/resurrection of the saints is so appropriate in light of the other words used by Jesus and Paul to describe this same event.
a). 1 Thessalonians 5:1, 2 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
5:2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
b). 2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
2). This same Greek word is used in two other New Testament applications to describe a supernatural transportation.
a). Acts 8:39, 40 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
8:40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.
b). 2 Corinthians 12:1-4 It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
12:2 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.
12:3 And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)
12:4 How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.

1). Albert Barnes NT Commentary: Then we which are alive. Those who shall then be alive…It properly marks succession in time, and means afterwards, next, next in the order of events… The proper meaning of the word, however, denotes a succession so close as to exclude the idea of a long interval in which other important transactions would occur, such an interval, for example, as would be involved in a long personal reign of the Redeemer on earth.
2). The clear meaning of the corresponding verses of 1 Corinthians 15:52 with 1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17 preach that the whole process of the dead rising first and the changing of our bodies and our being caught up with them in the clouds will take place “in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye”.
