2 Thessalonians 2:10

2 Thessalonians 2:10

And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

a. NLT: He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them.

b. NIV: And all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

c. YLT: And in all deceitfulness of the unrighteousness in those perishing, because the love of the truth they did not receive for their being saved,

d. Amplified Bible Classic: And by unlimited seduction to evil and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing (going to perdition) because they did not welcome the Truth but refused to love it that they might be saved.

e. Worrell Translation: And in all deceit of unrighteousness to those who perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

f. Wuest Translation: nd whose coming and presence is in the sphere of every kind of wicked deception geared to [the gullibility of] those who are perishing, [this gullibility being] caused by the fact that they did not accept the love for the truth to the end that they might be saved.

1. “And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish…”

a. And [Strong: 2532  kai, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. with [Strong: 1722 en, en; a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]

c. all [Strong: 3956 pas, pas; including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole:--all (manner of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.]

d. deceivableness [Strong: 539 apate, ap-at-ay; from 538; delusion:--deceit(-ful, -fulness), deceivableness(-ving).]

e. of unrighteousness [Strong: 93 adikia, ad-ee-kee-ah; from 94; (legal) injustice (properly, the quality, by implication, the act); morally, wrongfulness (of character, life or act):--iniquity, unjust, unrighteousness, wrong.]

f. in [Strong: 1722 en, en; a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]

g. them that perish [Strong: 622 apollumi, ap-ol-loo-mee; from 575 and the base of 3639; to destroy fully (reflexively, to perish, or lose), literally or figuratively:--destroy, die, lose, mar, perish.

1). Paul is speaking here in particular about those who will be deceived by the anti-Christ, who will use as 2 Thessalonians 2:9 declares, every trick he can muster to deceive. He will use signs and lying wonders. He will also pervert the gospel. A good example of this would be the false prophet who opposed Paul and Barnabas and tried to mislead Sergius Paulus away from the truth of the gospel.

a). Acts 13:6-11 And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus:
13:7 Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God.
13:8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.
13:9 Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him,
13:10 And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?
13:11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

2). There are individuals and groups all across our nation who are children of the devil, enemies of righteousness and they pervert the ways of God. Their philosophies are so easy to believe, so natural. Even today in December of 2011 the enemy is using every trick in the book to deceive and seduce. The country I live in is not the country I was born in, because unrighteousness and ungodliness have become so rampant and accepted in this nation. Multitudes in our nation, the majority are following, pursuing and accepting the unrighteousness and ungodliness in our nation and in the world. They are deceived because they are following their natural carnal thinking.

a). Romans 8:5-7 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

3). The Apostle Paul warned the Colossian believers with wisdom that applied here, describes what is happening in our nation.

a). Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

b). Empty, hollow and deceitful philosophies that are antagonistic to the knowledge of God are spoiling or capturing the majority of American culture. There is a reason for this abandonment and it is stated in the rest of the verse.

2. “…because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.”

a. because [Strong: 473 anti, an-tee; a primary particle; opposite, i.e. instead or because of (rarely in addition to):--for, in the room of. Often used in composition to denote contrast, requital, substitution, correspondence, etc.]

1). [Strong: 3739 hos, hos; including feminine he hay, and neuter ho ho probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc]

b. received [Strong: 1209 dechomai, dekh-om-ahee; middle voice of a primary verb; to receive (in various applications, literally or figuratively):--accept, receive, take.]

c. not [Strong: 3756 ou, oo; a primary word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+ long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but.]

d. love [Strong: 26 agape, ag-ah’-pay; from 25; love, i.e. affection or benevolence; specially (plural) a love-feast:--(feast of) charity(-ably), dear, love.]

e. of the truth [Strong: 225 aletheia, al-ay’-thi-a; from 227; truth:--true, X truly, truth, verity.]

f. that [Strong: 1519 eis, ice; a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial phrases:--(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), ...ward, (where-)fore, with. Often used in composition with the same general import, but only with verbs (etc.) expressing motion (literally or figuratively).]

g. they [Strong: 846 autos, ow-tos; from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

h. might be saved [Strong: 4982 sozo, sode’-zo; from a primary sos (contraction for obsolete saos, "safe"); to save, i.e. deliver or protect (literally or figuratively):--heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole.]

1). This is the pivotal point in why so many are being deceived, “because they received not the love of the truth”. The Amplified reads, “because they did not welcome the Truth but refused to love it”. It is clear that these people were presented the truth concerning salvation in Christ, but they rejected it. Notice the wording, they were presented with the truth about how they “might be saved”, but they did not receive or accept it. They reject clear revealed truth and as a result they are setting themselves up to be deceived even worse. As a nation we are on a constitutional rampage to remove the knowledge of God in our culture. After successfully outlawing the knowledge of God from our public schools, the mopping up process involves individual schools and districts to move in compliance in ways such as removing God from any “Holiday” programs. In some districts the use of the word “Christmas” is not allowed. The following examples are now common place across our nation.

a). In 2010 South Orange and Maplewood School District banned “Silent Night” and other religious songs from their holiday programs.  The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ban. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/06/ban-on-school-christmas-c_n_751839.html

b). Glendale-Riverhills School District in Glendale Wisconsin has a written policy that declares: “Music programs given at times close to religious holidays should not use the religious aspect of these holidays as the underlying motive or theme. No songs should be sung which contain dogmatic religious statements."  Songs such as “Silent Night” and “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing” are not allowed to be sung. http://www.lc.org/pressrelease/2005/nr120505.htm

2). When we as individuals, as families, as churches, as communities, as cities and nations, do not have a love of the truth, i.e., the word of God, we  are setting ourselves up to be captured by ungodly philosophies. Deceitful and hollow arguments will sway, win over and capture those who do not love the truth. Constitutionally our courts have laid down their position against the things of God, in effect; it is the counsel of the wicked.

a). Proverbs 1:25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:

b). Proverbs 1:29, 30 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
1:30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

c). Job 24:13 They are of those that rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof.

d). Job 21:14-16 Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.
21:15 What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?
21:16 Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

3). Those who do not receive the love of the truth, reject Christ as the only way to heaven, they are already captured by other philosophies. They are prisoners to philosophies that reject the truth of the Scripture, reject institution of marriage, embrace all forms of immorality, embrace atheistic philosophies such as evolution. Those who embrace such anti-God/anti-Christ philosophies will also embrace the anti-Christ.
