2 Thessalonians 2:4

2 Thessalonians 2:4

Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

1. “Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped…”

a. In this verse we see a couple pieces of the prophetic puzzle, and to be honest with you that is really all we have are pieces scattered across Scripture that we piece together. We do get a picture but not a complete picture or one that we would prefer.

b. opposeth [480 * antikeimai; anti-against; keimai-to be placed, to lie][Zodhiates: To oppose, the one lying against, an adversary…]

c. exalteth [5229 * huperairo; huper-above; airo-to lift up][Zodhates: to lift above, elevate, exalt, arrogant.]

1). Daniel 11:36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.

2). This is the spirit of Lucifer that possesses the anti-Christ. Lucifer said and attempted to dethrone God and here the anti-Christ is exhibiting the same rebellion. This spirit has also possessed other leaders through out history.

a). Isaiah 14:12-14 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

b). Ezekiel 28:1, 2 The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,
Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:

2. “…so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.”

a. The anti-Christ will declare himself to be God and he will also speak against God and utter blasphemies toward Him.

1). Revelation 13:5, 6 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

2). Daniel 11:37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

a). In the verse from Daniel there is a hint that the anti-Christ will be a homosexual because as the above verse declares, the anti-Christ will not regard any deity, nor will he regard the desire of women. Does that mean his desire for women or does that mean women’s desire for him or does it mean women’s desire generally. More than a few Bible teachers conclude that this is referring to the anti-Christ being homosexual. It also might mean he will be asexual, that is free from any sexual desire toward men or women.

b. This is probably the event Jesus mentioned in Mark 13, referring to what Daniel wrote.

1). Mark 13:14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:

2). Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

3).  When Paul wrote this epistle the Jewish temple was still standing and later was destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D. This has prompted many Bible teachers to conclude that during the time of the anti-Christ, the temple will be rebuilt. In Judaism today there is a movement to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem and those involved in that movement are restoring everything associated with the temple, and it is called the Temple Institute. In the passage from Daniel 9 it is obvious the sacrifices would be ordered to cease by the anti-Christ, which means they had to be reinstituted for that to occur. There is a wealth of information out there and as I study it out it will be added to my notes, but for now, at least for these notes, as I study it out I will post it and add it to existing passages.
