commandment is a lamp, and the whole teaching [of the law] is light, and
reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
e. Septuagint: For the commandment
of the law is a lamp and a light; a way of life; reproof also and correction:
f. Stone Edition
Torah/Writings/Prophets: For a commandment is a lamp and the Torah is light;
and reproving discipline is the way of life.
1. “For the commandment is a lamp…”
a. commandment [4687 * mitzvah][Strong:
a command, whether human or divine (collectively, the Law):--(which was)
commanded(-ment), law, ordinance, precept.]
b. lamp [5216 * niyr][Strong: meaning
to glisten; a lamp (i.e. the burner) or light (literally or
figuratively):--candle, lamp, light.]
1). This Hebrew word is used for
the lamps in the building of the Tabernacle, it is also used in Psalms to
describe God’s word.
a). Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto
my feet, and a light unto my path.
b). Just as a light will guide our
feet in darkness, the word of God will guide us and enable us to stumble in spiritual
and moral darkness.
2. “…and the law is light…”
a. law [8451 * towrah][Strong: a
precept or statute, especially the Decalogue or Pentateuch:--law.]
b. light [216 * ‘owr][Strong: illumination
or (concrete) luminary (in every sense, including lightning, happiness, etc.):--bright,
clear, + day, light (-ning), morning, sun.]
c. There is a verse in Isaiah that
adds commentary to the verse here in Proverbs.
1). Isaiah 8:20 To the law and to
the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
3. “…and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:”
a. reproofs [8433 * towkechah][Strong:
chastisement; figuratively (by words) correction, refutation, proof (even in
defence):--argument, X chastened, correction, reasoning, rebuke, reproof, X be
(often) reproved.]
b. instruction [4148 * muwcar][Strong:
chastisement; figuratively, reproof, warning or instruction; also
restraint:--bond, chastening ((-eth)), chastisement, check, correction,
discipline, doctrine, instruction, rebuke.
c. way [1870 * derek][Strong: a
road (as trodden); figuratively, a course of life or mode of action, often
adverb:--along, away, because of, + by, conversation, custom, (east-)ward,
journey, manner, passenger, through, toward, (high-) (path-)way(-side),
whither(-soever).]
1). This “way” is a course of life,
a journey, a mode of action, and it leads to life. There are other passages
from the Old and New testaments that reflect that same exhortation.
a). Proverbs 16:17 The highway of
the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his
soul.
b). Matthew 7:13, 14 Enter ye in
at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to
destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
7:14 Because strait is the gate,
and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
