1 Timothy 6:20

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

a. NLT: Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you. Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge.

b. NIV: Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge,

    

c. YLT: O Timotheus, the thing entrusted guard thou, avoiding the profane vain-words and opposition of the falsely-named knowledge,

d. Amplified Bible Classic: O Timothy, guard and keep the deposit entrusted [to you]! Turn away from the irreverent babble and godless chatter, with the vain and empty and worldly phrases, and the subtleties and the contradictions in what is falsely called knowledge and spiritual illumination.

e. Worrell Translation: O Timothy, guard the deposit; turning away from the profane bablings, and oppositions of that which is falsely called knowledge.

f. Wuest Translation: O, Timothy, that which was committed to you, guard, turning away from unhallowed and empty mouthings and oppositions of the falsely named knowledge.

1. “O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust…”

a. O [Strong: 5599 o o a primary interjection; as a sign of the vocative case, O; as a note of exclamation, oh:--O.]

b. Timothy [Strong: 5095 Timotheos tee-moth'-eh-os from 5092 and 2316; dear to God; Timotheus, a Christian:--Timotheus, Timothy.]

c. keep [Strong: 5442 phulasso foo-las'-so probably from 5443 through the idea of isolation; to watch, i.e. be on guard (literally of figuratively); by implication, to preserve, obey, avoid:--beward, keep (self), observe, save.]

d. that which [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

e. is committed to thy trust [Strong: 3872 parakatatheke par-ak-at-ath-ay'-kay from a compound of 3844 and 2698; something put down alongside, i.e. a deposit (sacred trust):--that (thing) which is committed (un-)to (trust).]

2. “…avoiding profane and vain babblings…”

a. avoiding [Strong: 1624 ektrepo ek-trep'-o from 1537 and the base of 5157; to deflect, i.e. turn away (literally or figuratively):--avoid, turn (aside, out of the way).]

b. profane [Strong: 952 bebelos beb'-ay-los from the base of 939 and belos (a threshold); accessible (as by crossing the door-way), i.e. (by implication, of Jewish notions) heathenish, wicked:--profane (person).]

c. and vain babblings [Strong: 2757 kenophonia ken-of-o-nee'-ah from a presumed compound of 2756 and 5456; empty sounding, i.e. fruitless discussion:--vain.]

1). In Paul’s second letter to Timothy he goes a little deeper and gives us the reason for avoiding such things.

a). 2 Timothy 2: 16-18 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

2:17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;

2:18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.

b). This kind of teaching will eat away from our foundation of faith in God.

3. “…and oppositions of science falsely so called:”

a. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. oppositions [Strong: 477 . antithesis an-tith'-es-is from a compound of 473 and 5087; opposition, i.e. a conflict (of theories):--opposition.]

c. of science [Strong: 1108  gnosis gno'-sis from 1097; knowing (the act), i.e. (by implication) knowledge:--knowledge, science.]

d. falsly so called [Strong: 5581 pseudonumos psyoo-do'-noo-mos from 5571 and 3686; untruly named:--falsely so called.]

1). There are books all over the world that contain falsely called “knowledge” that opposes the truth, wisdom and word of God.
