Hebrews 1:11

They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;

a. NLT: They will perish, but you remain forever. They will wear out like old clothing.

b. NIV: They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment.

    

c. YLT: These shall perish, and Thou dost remain, and all, as a garment, shall become old,

d. Amplified Bible Classic: They will perish, but You remain and continue permanently; they will all grow old and wear out like a garment.

e. Worrell Translation: They shall perish. But Thou continues; and they will all become old as does a garment.

f. Wuest Translation: They themselves shall perish, but as for you, you remain permanently. And all these shall become old and worn as a garment.

1. “They shall perish; but thou remainest…”

a. They [Strong: 846 autos ow-tos' from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

1). The “they” he is referring to are the earth and the heavens. Jesus himself said his word would outlast the material universe.

a). Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

2). During the Great White Throne Judgment the current material universe will be replaced.

a). Revelation 20:11-21:1And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

3). Peter describes it in his second epistle.

a). 2 Peter 3:10-14 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

3:11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

3:14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

b. shall perish [Strong: 622 apollumi ap-ol'-loo-mee from 575 and the base of 3639; to destroy fully (reflexively, to perish, or lose), literally or figuratively:--destroy, die, lose, mar, perish.]

c. but [Strong: 1161 de deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

d. thou [Strong: 4771 su soo the person pronoun of the second person singular; thou:-- thou.]

e. remainest [Strong: 1265 diameno dee-am-en'-o from 1223 and 3306; to stay constantly (in being or relation):--continue, remain.]

1). Hebrews 1:11 is part of Hebrews 1:8-13, a passage which is quoted from Psalm 45:6, 7 and Psalm 102:25-27. Both passages from Psalms are conversations between at least two of the Persons of the Godhead, identified in those Old Testament passages as the LORD God and the LORD God, but in the New Testament identified as the Father and the Son. This is truly astounding. These dialogues are not frequent in the Word, offhand I can only think of three and all of them are in Psalms. There are probably more but my limited knowledge can only quickly think of three.

2. “…and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;”

a. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. they all [Strong: 3956 pas pas including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole:--all (manner of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.]

c. shall wax old [Strong: 3822 palaioo pal-ah-yo'-o from 3820; to make (passively, become) worn out, or declare obsolete:--decay, make (wax) old.]

d. as [Strong: 5613 hos hoce probably adverb of comparative from 3739; which how, i.e. in that manner (very variously used, as follows):--about, after (that), (according) as (it had been, it were), as soon (as), even as (like), for, how (greatly), like (as, unto), since, so (that), that, to wit, unto, when(-soever), while, X with all speed.]

e. doth a garment [Strong: 2440 himation him-at'-ee-on neuter of a presumed derivative of ennumi (to put on); a dress (inner or outer):--apparel, cloke, clothes, garment, raiment, robe, vesture.]

1). The Prophet Isaiah refers to the passing away of the present physical universe.

a). Isaiah 34:4 And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.

b). Isaiah 51:6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.
