Hebrews 1:10
And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:
a. NLT: He also says to the Son, “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth and made the heavens with your hands.
b. NIV: He also says, “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.
c. YLT: and, 'Thou, at the beginning, Lord, the earth didst found, and a work of thy hands are the heavens;
d. Amplified Bible Classic: And [further], You, Lord, did lay the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the works of Your hands.
e. Worrell Translation: “Thou, Lord, in the beginning didst lay the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of Thy hands.
f. Wuest Translation: And as for you, in the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth. And the works of your hands are the heavens.
1. “And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth…”
a. And [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
b. Thou [Strong: 4771 su soo the person pronoun of the second person singular; thou:-- thou.]
c. Lord [Strong: 2962 kurios koo'-ree-os from kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):-- God, Lord, master, Sir.]
d. in [Strong: 2596 kata kat-ah' a primary particle; (prepositionally) down (in place or time), in varied relations (according to the case (genitive, dative or accusative) with which it is joined):--about, according as (to), after, against, (when they were) X alone, among, and, X apart, (even, like) as (concerning, pertaining to touching), X aside, at, before, beyond, by, to the charge of, (charita-)bly, concerning, + covered, (dai-)ly, down, every, (+ far more) exceeding, X more excellent, for, from ... to, godly, in(-asmuch, divers, every, -to, respect of), ... by, after the manner of, + by any means, beyond (out of) measure, X mightily, more, X natural, of (up-)on (X part), out (of every), over against, (+ your) X own, + particularly, so, through(-oughout, -oughout every), thus, (un-)to(-gether, -ward), X uttermost, where(-by), with. e. the beginning [Strong: 746 arche ar-khay' from 756; (properly abstract) a commencement, or (concretely) chief (in various applications of order, time, place, or rank):--beginning, corner, (at the, the) first (estate), magistrate, power, principality, principle, rule.]
f. hast laid the foundation [Strong: 2311 themelioo them-el-ee-o'-o from 2310; to lay a basis for, i.e. (literally) erect, or (figuratively) consolidate:--(lay the) found(- ation), ground, settle.]
g. of the [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]
h. earth [Strong: 1093 ge ghay contracted from a primary word; soil; by extension a region, or the solid part or the whole of the terrene globe (including the occupants in each application):--country, earth(-ly), ground, land, world.]
1). In Psalm 102:25 these inspired words were directed by the writer toward the Most High God, the previous verse (Psalm 102:24) establishes this fact. But looking at them in the Hebrews 1:8-12 context, the verses, Psalm 45:6, 7 and Psalm 102:25-27 are spoken by the LORD God (the Father), to the LORD God (the Son).
a). Hebrews 1:8-12 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
1:9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
1:10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:
1:11 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;
1:12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.
2). In light of this revelation it would be profitable for us to look at another passage from Job. In the book of Job when God was reading Job a riot act he asked Job where was he when he did lay the foundations of the earth?
a). Job 38:1-4 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
38:2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
38:3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
38:4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
b). In light of these passages we can for sure say these words from Job were spoken by the pre-incarnate Christ Jesus, for as Psalm 102:25 and Hebrews 1:8-10 declare, it was the Second Person of the Godhead who laid the foundation of the earth. Indeed, further revelation from the New Testament confirms that the LORD God, the second Person of the Godhead, the pre-incarnate Christ Jesus created everything.
2. “…and the heavens are the works of thine hands:”
a. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
b. the [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]
c. heavens [Strong: 3772 ouranos oo-ran-os' perhaps from the same as 3735 (through the idea of elevation); the sky; by extension, heaven (as the abode of God); by implication, happiness, power, eternity; specially, the Gospel (Christianity):--air, heaven(-ly), sky.]
d. are [Strong: 1526 eisi i-see' 3d person plural present indicative of 1510; they are:--agree, are, be, dure, X is, were.]
e. the works [Strong: 2041 ergon er'-gon from a primary (but obsolete) ergo (to work); toil (as an effort or occupation); by implication, an act:--deed, doing, labour, work.]
f. of thine [Strong: 4675 sou soo genitive case of 4771; of thee, thy:--X home, thee, thine (own), thou, thy.]
g. hands [Strong: 5495 . cheir khire perhaps from the base of 5494 in the sense of its congener the base of 5490 (through the idea of hollowness for grasping); the hand (literally or figuratively (power); especially (by Hebraism) a means or instrument):--hand.]
1). A second witness is also found in Psalms
a). Psalms 8:1-3 O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
8:2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
8:3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
2). In light of the inspired truth that all of creation are the work of the pre-incarnate Christ Jesus, there is a wonderful passage in Isaiah 40 that gives inspired divine comments on the creation of the heavens and the earth.
a). Isaiah 4:12, 13 Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?
4:13 Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him?
b). The Universe is so vast we can’t measure its greatest extent nor the amount of stars it holds, but man with his instruments and mathematics uses the light year to speculate the distances of the universe. The formula for the light year is this: light travels at 186,000 miles per second (that is 7+ times around the earth in one second), at that speed compute the distant light would travel in a year and you have 1 light year. Man uses the light year to measure the distances in the Universe, while God uses his hands!
3). The Scripture says in Proverbs 3:19 that “by understanding hath he established the heavens”. The Hebrew word for “understanding” is “tabuwn”, the Strongs number is 8394 and according to Wilhelm Gesenius’ Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon to the Old Testament, it means “understanding, intelligence, intelligence, understanding, insight.” In other words God did not just throw the stars and galaxies up into the universe, but by intelligence and insight placed them in the heavens where they should be. Getting back to the inspired citation in Hebrews we can say with confidence this person is the Lord Jesus Christ before his incarnation, who the God of the universe addressed as God. Hallelujah!
