Acts 15:39

And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;

a. NLT: Their disagreement was so sharp that they separated. Barnabas took John Mark with him and sailed for Cyprus.

b. NIV: They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus,

c. YLT: There came, therefore, a sharp contention, so that they were parted from one another, and Barnabas having taken Mark, did sail to Cyprus,

d. Amplified Bible Classic: And there followed a sharp disagreement between them, so that they separated from each other, and Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus.

e. Worrell Translation: And there arose a sharp contention, so that they parted one from the other; and Barnabas, taking with him Mark, sailed away to Cyprus.

1. “And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other…”

a. And [Strong: 3767 oun oon apparently a primary word; (adverbially) certainly, or (conjunctionally) accordingly:--and (so, truly), but, now (then), so (likewise then), then, therefore, verily, wherefore.]

In composition (as a prefix) it usually denotes separation, departure, cessation, completion, reversal, etc.]

i. the other [Strong: 240 allelon al-lay'-lone Genitive plural from 243 reduplicated; one another:--each other, mutual, one another, (the other), (them-, your-)selves, (selves) together (sometimes with 3326 or 4314).]

1). The Book of Acts, Stanley M. Horton: Both Paul and Barnabas felt so strongly about this that they felt temporary irritation, perhaps indignation. The Greek indicates sharp feeling between them. But they did not let this hinder the work of the Lord; they came up with a peaceful settlement. They decided it was best to separate and divide up the responsibility of visiting and encouraging the believers.

2. “…and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;”

a. and so [Strong: 5037 te teh a primary particle (enclitic) of connection or addition; both or also (properly, as correlation of 2532):--also, and, both, even, then, whether. Often used in composition, usually as the latter participle.]

b. Barnabas [Strong: 921 Barnabas bar-nab'-as of Chaldee origin (1247 and 5029); son of Nabas (i.e. prophecy); Barnabas, an Israelite:--Barnabas.]

c. took [Strong: 3880 paralambano par-al-am-ban'-o from 3844 and 2983; to receive near, i.e. associate with oneself (in any familiar or intimate act or relation); by analogy, to assume an office; figuratively, to learn:--receive, take (unto, with).]

d. Mark [Strong: 3138 Markos mar'-kos of Latin origin; Marcus, a Christian:--Marcus, Mark.]

e. and sailed [Strong: 1602 ekpleo ek-pleh'-o from 1537 and 4126; to depart by ship:--sail (away, thence).]

1). Barnabas and mark went to Cyprus which was the first part of the first missionary tour while Paul and Silas went to the Southern Galatia  part.
