Acts 17:11


Acts 17:11

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

a. NLT: And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.

b. NIV: Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

1. “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica…”

1). The Acts of the Apostles, Robert A. Tourville: The term “more noble-minded” (eugensteroi) is used three times in the New Testament (Luke 19:12; Acts 17:11; 1 Corinthians 1:26). In the other two instances, the meaning is of noble birth, but here Luke explains what he means. Two characteristics mark these people. First, they eagerly receive the word. “Eagerness” (prothumia) is used once in Acts and four times in 2 Corinthians (8:11; 8:12; 8:19; 9:2). The thought is with willing souls and hungry minds they received the gospel message. “Examining” (anakrinotes) is used five times in Acts and eleven times elsewhere in the New Testament. It is translated “examine,” “search,” “discern,” ‘judge,” and “ask questions.” The two parts of the word indicate ana, up, and krino,judge. The meaning is then to analyze the subject, and after looking at all the pieces, make a discesion…The Jews at Berea checked the Scriptures bit by bit to see if the Messiah had indeed come. They did not merely take the word of preachers without a thorough examination of the prophecies.

2). We must remember that many of the first converts to all of the churches that Paul established were Jews. He always went to the synagogue, the Jewish community first and while there always welcomed also the God fearers, Gentiles to believe. At that time in the first century A.D. the Jews had been already looking forward to the Messiah for 1400 years. The Jews at Berea heard Paul preach and then searched the word every day to see if Paul was right.
