2 Timothy 1:7

2 Timothy 1:7

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

a. NLT: For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

b. NIV: For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

c. YLT: For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind;

d. Amplified Bible Classic: For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.

e. Worrell Translation: For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and sobriety.

f. Wuest Translation: For God did not give to us a spirit of fearfulness but of power and of a divine and self-sacrificial love and of a sound mind.

1. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear…”

a. For [Strong: 1063 gar gar a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]

b. God [Strong: 2316 theos theh'-os of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]

c. hath…give [Strong: 1325 didomi did'-o-mee a prolonged form of a primary verb (which is used as an alternative in most of the tenses); to give (used in a very wide application, properly, or by implication, literally or figuratively; greatly modified by the connection):--adventure, bestow, bring forth, commit, deliver (up), give, grant, hinder, make, minister, number, offer, have power, put, receive, set, shew, smite (+ with the hand), strike (+ with the palm of the hand), suffer, take, utter, yield.]

d. not [Strong: ou oo, also (before a vowel) ouk ook, and (before an aspirate) ouch ookh a primary word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+ long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but.]

e. us [Strong: 2254 hemin hay-meen' dative case plural of 1473; to (or for, with, by) us:--our, (for) us, we.]

f. the spirit [Strong: 4151 pneuma pnyoo'-mah from 4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit:--ghost, life, spirit(-ual, -ually), mind.] [Zodhiates: In 2 Timothy 1:7…the rational spirit, mind, element of life as referring to the disposition, feeling, temper of mind.]

g. of fear [Strong: 1167 deilia di-lee'-ah from 1169; timidity:--fear.] [Zodhiates: Cowardice, timidity, fearfulness.]

1). I believe the above definition hits it right on. When Paul writes about “the spirit of”, he is not referring to the Holy Spirit, but the temper of something, its disposition.  Because of our relationship with God, our disposition will not be one of timidity, but of power. The term “school spirit” is not referring to an entity, but a characteristic, a behavior, an inspiration.

a). Romans 8:15 “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear…”

b). 1 John 4:18 “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment…”

c). Isaiah 41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

2. “…but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

a. but [Strong: 235 alla al-lah' neuter plural of 243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially) contrariwise (in many relations):--and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay, nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]

b. of power [Strong: 1411 dunamis doo'-nam-is from 1410; force (literally or figuratively); specially, miraculous power (usually by implication, a miracle itself):--ability, abundance, meaning, might(-ily, -y, -y deed), (worker of) miracle(-s), power, strength, violence, mighty (wonderful) work.] [Zodhiates: power, especially achieving power, a spirit of strength, meaning mainly vigor in opposition to a spirit of cowardice.]

c. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

d. of love [Strong: 26  agape ag-ah'-pay from 25; love, i.e. affection or benevolence; specially (plural) a love-feast:--(feast of) charity(-ably), dear, love.]

e. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

f. [of a] sound mind [Strong: 4995 sophronismos so-fron-is-mos' from 4994; discipline, i.e. self-control:--sound mind.] [Zodhiates: Self discipline, sobriety, sound mind, sound judgment.]

1). Rick Renner 2/6/16 This phrase is taken from the Greek word sophroneo, which is a compound word combining sodzo and phroneo. The Greek word sodzo means to be savedor delivered. It suggests something that is delivered, rescued, revived,salvaged, and protected and is now safe and secure. One expositor suggests that the word sodzo could actually depict a person who was on the verge of death but then was revived and resuscitated because new life was breathed into him.
The second part of the phrase “sound mind” comes from the Greek wordphroneo, which carries the idea of a person’s intelligence or total frame of thinking — including his rationale, logic, and emotions. The word phroneorefers to every part of the human mind, including all the processes that are engaged in making the mind function and come to conclusions. When the words sodzo and phroneo are compounded into one word, they form the word sophroneo, which pictures a mind that has been delivered, rescued, revived, salvaged, and protected and is now safe and secure.

2). Rick Renner 2/6/16 You see, when your mind is guarded by the Word of God, you think differently. When the Word of God is allowed to work in your mind, it safeguards your emotions; it defends your mind from demonic assault; and it shields you from arrows the enemy may try to shoot in your direction in order to arouse a spirit of fear inside you. Why is it important for you to understand this? Because when you begin to live a life of faith — when you reach out to do the impossible — the enemy will try to assault you mentally and emotionally in an attempt to stop your progress.

3). 2 Corinthians 10:4, 5 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds;
Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;”

4). Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

5). Amplified Bible: “…but he has given us a spirit of power and of love and of a calm and well balanced mind and discipline and self control.”
