2 Timothy 1:9

Who hath saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.

a. NLT: For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus.

b. NIV: He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,

1. “Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling…”

a. Who [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

b. hath saved [Strong: 4982 sozo sode'-zo from a primary sos (contraction for obsolete saos, "safe"); to save, i.e. deliver or protect (literally or figuratively):--heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole.]

1). Our calling is holy and is heavenly. He saved us and he called us. There are many who are saved but are ignorant of their calling.

a). Hebrews 3:1 “Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling…”

2. “…not according to our works…”

1). That is, what we do. Our business in the church after we get saved.

3. “…but according to his own purpose and grace…”

1). Our calling is to be in agreement with his purpose.  His purpose is for us to be transformed into the image of Jesus Christ.

a). Romans 8:28, 29 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.

8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

b). Ephesians 1:11, 12 In whom also we have an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

1:12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

2). Our ministry.

a). 2 Corinthians 3:18-4:1 But we all with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

4:1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;

3. “…which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.”

h. the world began [Strong: 5550 chronos khron'-os of uncertain derivation; a space of time (in general, and thus properly distinguished from 2540, which designates a fixed or special occasion; and from 165, which denotes a particular period) or interval; by extension, an individual opportunity; by implication, delay:--+ years old, season, space, (X often-)time(-s), (a) while.]

i. the world began [Strong: 166 aionios ahee-o'-nee-os from 165; perpetual (also used of past time, or past and future as well):--eternal, for ever, everlasting, world (began).]

1). The counsel and the will of the Triune Godhead foreordained that Christ would die and his blood would redeem man (1 Peter 1:18-20).

a). 1 Peter 1:18-20 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;

But with the precious blood of Christ, as a lamb without blemish and without spot:

Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.

2). Within that will and counsel it was ordained that man, after his redemption would find his calling, his reason and purpose for living, in Christ. That is, when man would voluntarily yield his life to walk in obedience in order to conform his life to the image of Christ Jesus, that is when men and women would find their calling and reason for living, what they were placed on this earth for. That holy calling, that purpose was manifested when Jesus appeared on earth.
