1.
“Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently…”
a. of [Strong:
4012 peri per-ee' from the base of 4008; properly, through (all
over), i.e. around; figuratively with respect to; used in various applications,
of place, cause or time (with the genitive case denoting the subject or
occasion or superlative point; with the accusative case the locality, circuit,
matter, circumstance or general period):--(there-)about, above, against, at, on
behalf of, X and his company, which concern, (as) concerning, for, X how it
will go with, ((there-, where-)) of, on, over, pertaining (to), for sake, X
(e-)state, (as) touching, (where-)by (in), with. In comparative, it retains
substantially the same meaning of circuit (around), excess (beyond), or
completeness (through).]
b. which [Strong:
3739 hos hos, including feminine he hay, and neuter ho ho
probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively
(sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the)
other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]
c. salvation [Strong:
4991 soteria so-tay-ree'-ah feminine of a derivative of 4990 as
(properly, abstract) noun; rescue or safety (physically or morally):--deliver,
health, salvation, save, saving.] [Scofield Reference Bible: “The Hebrew and
Greek words for salvation imply the ideas of deliverance, safety, preservation,
healing and soundness. Salvation is the great inclusive word of the Gospel,
gathering into itself all the redemptive acts and processes…”]
d. the prophets
[Strong: 4396 prophetes prof-ay'-tace from a compound of 4253 and
5346; a foreteller ("prophet"); by analogy, an inspired speaker; by
extension, a poet:--prophet.]
e. have enquired
[Strong: 1567 ekzeteo ek-zay-teh'-o from 1537 and 2212; to search
out, i.e. (figuratively)investigate, crave, demand, (by Hebraism) worship:--en-
(re-)quire, seek after (carefully, diligently).] [Thayer: to seek out, search
for, investigate, scrutinize.]
f. and [Strong:
2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a
copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then,
too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or
small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then,
therefore, when, yet.]
g. searched
diligently [Strong: 1830 exereunao ex-er-yoo-nah'-o from 1537 and
2045; to explore (figuratively):--search diligently.]
1). As the
prophets were moved upon by the Holy Ghost and by the Spirit of Christ and
uttered and wrote down the inspired words they were given by God, they greatly
desired to know when and how these things would happen. Jesus mentioned this to
the Apostles during his ministry.
a). Matthew 13:17
For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to
see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things
which ye hear, and have not heard them.
b). Luke 10:24 For
I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which
ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and
have not heard them.
2.
“…who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you.”
a. who [Strong:
3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to
in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied,
at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]
b. prophesied
[Strong: 4395 propheteuo prof-ate-yoo'-o from 4396; to foretell
events, divine, speak under inspiration, exercise the prophetic
office:--prophesy.]
In comparative, it retains
substantially the same meaning of circuit (around), excess (beyond), or
completeness (through).]
d. the grace
[Strong: 5485 charis khar'-ece from 5463; graciousness (as
gratifying), of manner or act (abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or
spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection
in the life; including gratitude):--acceptable, benefit, favour, gift, grace(-
ious), joy, liberality, pleasure, thank(-s, -worthy).]
e. [that should
come] unto [Strong: 1519 eis ice a primary preposition; to or
into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or
(figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial
phrases:--(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning,
+ continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in
(among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one mind, +
never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto),
throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), ...ward,
(where-)fore, with. Often used in composition with the same general import, but
only with verbs (etc.) expressing motion (literally or figuratively).]
f. you [Strong: 5209
humas hoo-mas' accusative case of 5210; you (as the objective of
a verb or preposition):--ye, you (+ -ward), your (+ own).]
1). The grace
Peter was referring to is all that is in the New Covenant. Paul preached it.
a). Acts 14:3 Long
time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony
unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their
hands.
2). A perfect
example of this grace prophesied by the prophets, and fulfilled in Christ Jesus
in the New Covenant is the truth of ‘justification by faith’ first promised in
Isaiah and revealed in Acts and Romans.
a). Isaiah 53:11b
“…by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear
their iniquities.”
b). Acts 13:32,
34-39 And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made
unto the fathers…
13:34 And as
concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to
corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.
13:35 Wherefore he
saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see
corruption.
13:36 For David,
after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and
was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:
13:37 But he, whom
God raised again, saw no corruption.
13:38 Be it known
unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto
you the forgiveness of sins:
13:39 And by him
all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be
justified by the law of Moses.
c). Romans 3:19-28
Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under
the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty
before God.
3:20 Therefore by
the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the
law is the knowledge of sin.
3:21 But now the
righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law
and the prophets;
3:22 Even the
righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all
them that believe: for there is no difference:
3:23 For all have
sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
3:24 Being
justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
3:25 Whom God hath
set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his
righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of
God;
3:26 To declare, I
say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier
of him which believeth in Jesus.
3:27 Where is
boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? Nay: but by the law of
faith.
3:28 Therefore we
conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
3). Another
example of the grace prophesied by the prophets and fulfilled in the New
Covenant is found in Jeremiah and Hebrews.
a). Jeremiah 31:31-34
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the
house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
31:32 Not
according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took
them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they
brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
31:33 But this
shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those
days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in
their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
31:34 And they
shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying,
Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the
greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will
remember their sin no more.
b). Hebrews
10:15-17 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had
said before,
10:16 This is the
covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will
put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
10:17 And their
sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
