1 Peter 1:14

As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

a. NLT: So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then.

b. NIV: As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.

c. YLT: As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves to the former desires in your ignorance,

d. Amplified Bible Classic: [Live] as children of obedience [to God]; do not conform yourselves to the evil desires [that governed you] in your former ignorance [when you did not know the requirements of the Gospel].

f. Wuest Translation: As obedient children, not assuming an outward expression which does not come from your inner being [as a child of God] and is not representative of it, an expression patterned after that expression which you formerly had in ignorance of your passionate desires.

1. “As obedient children…”

a. As [Strong: 5613 hos hoce probably adverb of comparative from 3739; which how, i.e. in that manner (very variously used, as follows):--about, after (that), (according) as (it had been, it were), as soon (as), even as (like), for, how (greatly), like (as, unto), since, so (that), that, to wit, unto, when(-soever), while, X with all speed.]

b. obedient [Strong: 5218 hupakoe hoop-ak-o-ay' from 5219; attentive hearkening, i.e. (by implication) compliance or submission:--obedience, (make) obedient, obey(-ing).] [Thayer: obedience, compliance, submission, obedience rendered to anyone's counsels, an obedience shown in observing the requirements of Christianity.]

c. children [Strong: 4053 perissos per-is-sos' from 4012 (in the sense of beyond); superabundant (in quantity) or superior (in quality); by implication, excessive; adverbially (with 1537) violently; neuter (as noun) preeminence:--exceeding abundantly above, more abundantly, advantage, exceedingly, very highly, beyond measure, more, superfluous, vehement(-ly).]

1). Here is the sum for the purpose of the grace given to us, obedience. Just as the goal for meditation in Joshua is to “observe to do”, the purpose for grace is obedience.

2. “…not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance.”

a. not [Strong: 3361 me may a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas 3756 expresses an absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative implying a negative answer (whereas 3756 expects an affirmative one)) whether:--any but (that), X forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither, never, no (X wise in), none, nor, (can-)not, nothing, that not, un(-taken), without. Often used in compounds in substantially the same relations.]

b. fashioning yourselves [Strong: 4964 suschematizo soos-khay-mat-id'-zo from 4862 and a derivative of 4976; to fashion alike, i.e. conform to the same pattern (figuratively):--conform to, fashion self according to.] [Thayer: to conform one's self (i.e. one's mind and character) to another's pattern, (fashion one's self according to). [Zodhiates: To fashion alike, conform to the same pattern outwardly.]

1). This Greek word is where we get the English word, schematic- a structural or procedural diagram. It is a diagram or directions on how to build something. This same word is used in Romans by Paul.

a). Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

2). We are to fashion ourselves, conform ourselves to righteous and godly living. It is our responsibility to change our behavior from evil to righteous because God has given us the divine power, the grace to do it. Obedient children do not conform themselves to their fleshly lusts, disobedient children do.

c. to the [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

d. former [Strong: 4386 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

1). Formerly we fashioned or conformed ourselves according to the pattern of our fleshly desires, but we did so in ignorance because we did not know any better. We are no longer ignorant, not only do we have a new pattern to follow but we have been given the grace and the divine power to be obedient to this new pattern and in the next two verses Peter tells us what that pattern is.

e. lusts [Strong: 1939 epithumia ep-ee-thoo-mee'-ah from 1937; a longing (especially for what is forbidden):--concupiscence, desire, lust (after).]

h. ignorance [Strong: 52 agnoia ag'-noy-ah from 50; ignorance (properly, the quality):--ignorance.]

1). The exhortation could not be more clear, do not fashion yourselves, do not conform yourselves to the wrong pattern. The wrong pattern is the world’s pattern, it is as the rest of 1 Peter 1:14 declares, “…according to the former lust…” The wrong pattern is walking after the desires of the flesh, and the word of grace teaches otherwise.
