1 Peter 1:20

1 Peter 1:20

Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

a. NLT: God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but he has now revealed him to you in these last days.

b. NIV: He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

c. YLT: Foreknown, indeed, before the foundation of the world, and manifested in the last times because of you,

d. Amplified Bible Classic: It is true that He was chosen and foreordained (destined and foreknown for it) before the foundation of the world, but He was brought out to public view (made manifest) in these last days (at the end of the times) for the sake of you.

e. Worrell Translation: Foreknown, indeed, from a founding of a world, but manifested in the end of the times for you.

f. Wuest Translation: Who indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the universe was laid, but was visible manifested at the closing years of the times for your sake.

1. “Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world…”

a. [Who] verily [Strong: 3303 men men a primary particle; properly, indicative of affirmation or concession (in fact); usually followed by a contrasted clause with 1161 (this one, the former, etc.):--even, indeed, so, some, truly, verily. Often compounded with other particles in an intensive or asseverative sense.

b. [was] foreordained [Strong: 4267 proginosko prog-in-oce'-ko from 4253 and 1097; to know beforehand, i.e. foresee:--foreknow (ordain), know (before).] [Thayer: to have knowledge before hand, to foreknow, of those whom God elected to salvation, to predestinate.] [Zodhiates: Used of God’s eternal counsel it includes all that He has considered and purposed to do prior to human history. In the language of Scripture, something foreknown is not simply that which God was aware of prior to a certain point. Rather, it is presented as that which God gave prior consent to, that which received His favorable or special recognition. Hence, this term is reserved for those matters which God favorably, deliberately and freely chose and ordained.]

c. before [Strong: 4253 pro pro a primary preposition; "fore", i.e. in front of, prior (figuratively, superior) to:--above, ago, before, or ever. In the comparative, it retains the same significations.

d. the foundation [Strong: 2602 katabole kat-ab-ol-ay' from 2598; a deposition, i.e. founding; figuratively, conception:--conceive, foundation.] [Thayer:  a throwing or laying down, the injection or depositing of the virile semen in the womb, of the seed of plants and animals, a founding (laying down a foundation).]

e. the world [Strong: 2889 kosmos kos'-mos probably from the base of 2865; orderly arrangement, i.e. decoration; by implication, the world (in a wide or narrow sense, including its inhabitants, literally or figuratively (morally)):--adorning, world.]

1). What is meant by the phrase  that Jesus “was foreordained before the foundation of the world”, is the triune Godhead planned, determined and purposed the 2nd Person of the Godhead would be sacrificed for our redemption not only before the world was ever created, but before the details were planned out. The creation of the universe was planned, discussed, hashed out and determined by the three persons of the Godhead around the redemption of man as the central focus. From the moment this plan or this council was determined, the three persons of the Godhead have been implementing and carrying out this plan and will continue to do so until it is complete. The wonderful thing about this is that in much of it man was included in its implementation. The bottom line in all this is the plan of redemption is older than the earth. This is exactly why the Scriptures use the language it does in Genesis 1:1, In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. It was the beginning of the plan of redemption being carried out.

2. “…but was manifest in these last times for you.”

a. but [Strong: 1161 de deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. [was] manifested [Strong: 5319 phaneroo fan-er-o'-o from 5318; to render apparent (literally or figuratively):--appear, manifestly declare, (make) manifest (forth), shew (self).

c. in [Strong: 1909 epi ep-ee' a primary preposition; properly, meaning superimposition (of time, place, order, etc.), as a relation of distribution (with the genitive case), i.e. over, upon, etc.; of rest (with the dative case) at, on, etc.; of direction (with the accusative case) towards, upon, etc.:--about (the times), above, after, against, among, as long as (touching), at, beside, X have charge of, (be-, (where-))fore, in (a place, as much as, the time of, -to), (because) of, (up-)on (behalf of), over, (by, for) the space of, through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), with. In compounds it retains essentially the same import, at, upon, etc. (literally or figuratively).]

d. [these] last [Strong: 2078 eschatos es'-khat-os a superlative probably from 2192 (in the sense of contiguity); farthest, final (of place or time):--ends of, last, latter end, lowest, uttermost.]

e. times [Strong: 5550 chronos khron'-os of uncertain derivation; a space of time (in general, and thus properly distinguished from 2540, which designates a fixed or special occasion; and from 165, which denotes a particular period) or interval; by extension, an individual opportunity; by implication, delay:--+ years old, season, space, (X often-)time(-s), (a) while.]

f. for [Strong: 1223 dia dee-ah' a primary preposition denoting the channel of an act; through (in very wide applications, local, causal, or occasional):--after, always, among, at, to avoid, because of (that), briefly, by, for (cause) ... fore, from, in, by occasion of, of, by reason of, for sake, that, thereby, therefore, X though, through(-out), to, wherefore, with (-in). In composition it retains the same general importance.]

g. you [Strong: 5209 humas hoo-mas' accusative case of 5210; you (as the objective of a verb or preposition):--ye, you (+ -ward), your (+ own).

1). The New Covenant, centered on the sacrifice of Christ Jesus and included God’s purpose for us being transformed into his image was all planned out before the creation of the earth.

a). 2 Timothy 1:8-10 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

2). All of the wisdom concerning the New Covenant was planned out by the Triune Godhead before the creation of the world.

a). Matthew 13:34, 35 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:
13:35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

b). 1 Corinthians 2:6-10 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
2:8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

3). The New Covenant is now it is being revealed to us by the Holy Ghost. Glory to God!
