1 Peter 1:19

1 Peter 1:19

But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

a. NLT: It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.

b. NIV: But with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

c. YLT: But with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and unspotted -- Christ's --

d. Amplified Bible Classic: But [you were purchased] with the precious blood of Christ (the Messiah), like that of a [sacrificial] lamb without blemish or spot.

e. Worrell Translation: But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot;

f. Wuest Translation: But with costly blood, highly honored, blood as of a lamb that is without blemish and spotless, the blood of Christ.

1. “But with the precious blood of Christ…”

a. But [Strong: 235 alla al-lah' neuter plural of 243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially) contrariwise (in many relations):--and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay, nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]

b. [with the] precious [Strong: 5393 timios tim'-ee-os, including the comparative timioteros tim-ee-o'-ter-os, and the superlative timiotatos tim-ee-o'-tat-os from 5092; valuable, i.e. (objectively) costly, or (subjectively) honored, esteemed, or (figuratively) beloved:--dear, honourable, (more, most) precious, had in reputation.] [Thayer: as of great price, precious, held in honour, esteemed, especially dear.][Vine: costly.]

c. blood [Strong: 129 haima hah'-ee-mah of uncertain derivation; blood, literally (of men or animals), figuratively (the juice of grapes) or specially (the atoning blood of Christ); by implication, bloodshed, also kindred:--blood.]

d. [of] Christ [Strong: 5547 Christos khris-tos' from 5548; anointed, i.e. the Messiah, an epithet of Jesus:--Christ.]

1). The blood of Christ is precious, i.e., costly because the blood of Christ Jesus accomplished what the blood of bulls and goats could not, what nothing before it could do.

a). Hebrews 9:13, 14 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

b). Acts 13:38, 39 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:
13:39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

2). In the previous verse, 1 Peter 1:18 we saw that we were redeemed from “the law of sin and death”, and here that truth is bolstered with other Scriptural witnesses, here with the Greek definition of the word “justified”.

a). justified [Strong: 1344 dikaioo dik-ah-yo'-o from 1342; to render (i.e. show or regard as) just or innocent:--free, justify(-ier), be righteous.] [Zodhiates: it refers to all those things the Mosaic law would not liberate us. In this instance [Acts 13:39], it refers to liberation…from sin that hold a man in bondage…it does not mean mere declaration of innocence, but the liberation from sin.]

3). The blood of Christ is to be esteemed most highly because of what it paid for, it paid for the New Covenant.

2. “…as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”

a. as [Strong: 5613 hos hoce probably adverb of comparative from 3739; which how, i.e. in that manner (very variously used, as follows):--about, after (that), (according) as (it had been, it were), as soon (as), even as (like), for, how (greatly), like (as, unto), since, so (that), that, to wit, unto, when(-soever), while, X with all speed.]

b. [as of a] lamb [Strong: 286 amnos am-nos' apparently a primary word; a lamb:--lamb.]

c. without blemish [Strong: 299 amomos am'-o-mos from 1 (as a negative particle) and 3470; unblemished (literally or figuratively):--without blame (blemish, fault, spot), faultless, unblamable.]

d. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

e. without spot [Strong: 784 aspilos as'-pee-los from 1 (as a negative particle) and 4695; unblemished (physically or morally):--without spot, unspotted.]

1). This is of course referring to the Passover lamb. The Passover was a fore shadow of Jesus offering Himself for our redemption.

a). Exodus 12:1-14 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,
12:2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.
12:3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
12:4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.
12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
12:7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
12:8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
12:9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.
12:10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.
12:11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover.
12:12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
12:13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
12:14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

2). Jesus is our Passover. It is an interesting study to see that all of the major Jewish festivals that God instituted under the Old Covenant are foreshadows of the New Covenant. For example, the Passover is a foreshadow of the Jesus dying on the cross for our sins.

a). 1 Corinthians 5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us:

3). Jesus is without blemish or spot because he never sinned.

a). Hebrews 4:15 For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

2). The Church, the Body of Christ is to be washed first in His blood, but also daily by His word, by us reading, meditating, and obeying it. Thus we are being washed by His Word also.

a). Ephesians 5:26, 27 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

b). Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
