Hebrews 6:8
But
that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing;
whose end is to be burned.
a. NLT: But if a field bears thorns
and thistles, it is useless. The farmer will soon condemn that field and burn
it.
b. NIV: But land that produces
thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end
it will be burned.
c. YLT: and that which is bearing
thorns and briers is disapproved of, and nigh to cursing,
whose end is for burning;
d. Amplified Bible: But
if [that same soil] persistently bears thorns and thistles, it is considered
worthless and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.
e. Worrell Translation: but, if it
bears thorns and thistles, it is rejected, and is near to a curse; whose end is
to be burned.
1.
“But that which beareth thorns and briers…”
a. but [1161 * de] [Strong: a
primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and,
but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]
b. that which beareth [1627 *
ekphero] [Strong: from 1537 and 5342; to bear out (literally or
figuratively):--bear, bring forth, carry forth (out).]
c. thorns [173 * akantha][Thayer:
thorn, bramble, bush, brier, a thorny plant.]
d. and [2532 * kai] [Strong:
apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a
cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection
(or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but,
even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
e. briers [5146 * tribolos][Thayer:
a thistle, a prickly wild plant, hurtful to other plants.] [Strong: from 5140
and 956; properly, a crow-foot (three-pronged obstruction in war), i.e. (by
analogy) a thorny plant (caltrop):--brier, thistle.]
1). Thorns, thistles or briers are
the result of the fall of man.
a). Genesis 3:17, 18 And unto Adam
he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten
of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it:
cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days
of thy life;
3:18 Thorns also and thistles shall
it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
2). In the parable of the Sower
Jesus gave some very pointed meanings concerning thorns in a believers life.
They are serious hindrances to a believer producing fruit in their life.
a). Matthew 13:22 He also that
received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of
this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh
unfruitful.
b). Mark 4:18, 19 And these are
they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,
4:19 And the cares of this world,
and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in,
choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
3). An Old Testament passage in
Numbers clearly reveals that because Israel failed to obey the clear command of
God as to removing the previous inhabitants and their ungodly culture they
would be tormented and hindered from where they failed to obey the command of
God and the remnants of what remained would be thorns in their sides.
a). Numbers 33:50-55 And the LORD
spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,
33:51 Speak unto the children of
Israel, and say unto them, When ye are passed over Jordan into the land of
Canaan;
33:52 Then ye shall drive out all
the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their pictures,
and destroy all their molten images, and quite pluck down all their high
places:
33:53 And ye shall dispossess the
inhabitants of the land, and dwell therein: for I have given you the land to
possess it.
33:54 And ye shall divide the land
by lot for an inheritance among your families: and to the more ye shall give
the more inheritance, and to the fewer ye shall give the less inheritance:
every man's inheritance shall be in the place where his lot falleth; according
to the tribes of your fathers ye shall inherit.
33:55 But if ye will not drive out
the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that
those which ye let remain of them hall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your
sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.
b). Just as we saw in the Gospels,
thorns are the result of failure to obey the word of God.
4). One more passage from proverbs
illustrates again the cause and effect of thorns in a believers life.
a). Proverbs 24:30-34 I went by the
field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;
24:31 And, lo, it was all grown
over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall
thereof was broken down.
24:32 Then I saw, and considered it
well: I looked upon it, and received instruction.
24:33 Yet a little sleep, a little
slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
24:34 So shall thy poverty come as
one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.
b). Just as a lazy mans property
will suffer neglect and eventual destruction, spiritual laziness will produce a
poverty in our spiritual lives.
2.
“…is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing…”
a. is rejected [96 *
adokimos][Thayer: not standing the test, not approved, properly used of metals
and coins, that which does not prove
itself such as it ought, unfit for, unproved, spurious, reprobate.]
1). If we as Christians are
bringing forth a life of thorns, that is we are dominated with the care of this
world, and the deceitfulness of riches and the lusts of the flesh and the lusts
of other things, not only are we the ground that received seed among thorns,
but we are too lazy to do anything about it, because it is our responsibility
to remove the thorns out of our lives. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian
church that to keep himself from being a “castaway” [same Greek word as
“rejected”], he brought his flesh body under subjection and did not let it do
what it wanted to do.
a). 1 Corinthians 9:27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into
subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself
should be a castaway.
b. and [2532 * kai] [Strong:
apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a
cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection
(or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but,
even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
c. is nigh [1451 * eggus] [Strong: from
a primary verb agcho (to squeeze or throttle; akin to the base of 43); near
(literally or figuratively, of place or time):--from , at hand, near, nigh (at
hand, unto), ready.]
d. unto cursing [2671 *
katara][Thayer: an execration, imprecation, curse.] [Strong: from 2596 (intensive)
and 685; imprecation, execration:--curse(-d, ing).]
1). They are already rejected and
they are near to being cursed.
a). Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say
also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting
fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
2). The very opposite to those who
dressed their ground and produced herbs.
a). Hebrews 6:7 For the earth which
drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for
them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
b). One is blessed by God for their
faithfulness and the other is cursed for their unfaithfulness.
3.
“…whose end is to be burned.”
a. whose [3739 * hos] [Strong: including
feminine he hay, and neuter ho ho probably a primary word (or perhaps
a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun,
who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which,
who(-m, -se), etc.]
b. end [5056 * telos] [Strong: from
a primary tello (to set out for a definite point or goal); properly, the point
aimed at as a limit, i.e. (by implication) the conclusion of an act or state
(termination (literally, figuratively or indefinitely), result (immediate,
ultimate or prophetic), purpose); specially, an impost or levy (as paid):--+
continual, custom, end(-ing), finally, uttermost.]
c. is to [1519 * eis] [Strong: a
primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of
place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial
phrases:--(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by,
concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, +
forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one
mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that,
therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to),
...ward, (where-)fore, with. Often used in composition with the same general
import, but only with verbs (etc.) expressing motion (literally or
figuratively).]
d. be burned [2740 *kausis]
[Strong: from 2545; burning (the act):--be burned.]
1). John 15:6 If a man abide not in
me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and
cast them into the
fire, and they are burned.
2). Matthew 13:30 Let both grow
together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the
reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn
them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
3). 2 Samuel 23:6 But the sons of Belial shall be all of them as thorns
thrust away, because they cannot be taken with hands:
23:7 But the man that shall touch them must be
fenced with iron and the staff of a spear; and they shall be utterly burned
with fire in the same place.
4). Matthew 3:7-10 But when he saw
many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O
generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits
meet for repentance:
3:9 And think not to say within
yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able
of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
3:10 And now also the axe is laid
unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good
fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
5). Revelation 20:11- And I saw a
great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the
heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
20:12 And I saw the dead, small and
great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was
opened, which is the book of
life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the
books, according to their works.
20:13 And the sea gave up the dead
which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them:
and they were judged every man according to their works.
2014 And death and hell were cast
into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
2015 And whosoever was not found
written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
6). I believe it means being cast
into everlasting fire
