Revelation

another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there
was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of
all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.
a. NLT: Then
another angel with a gold incense burner came and stood at the altar. And a
great amount of incense was given to him to mix with the prayers of God’s
people as an offering on the gold altar before the throne.
b. NIV: Another
angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much
incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people, on the golden altar in
front of the throne.
c. YLT: and
another messenger did come, and he stood at the altar, having a golden censer,
and there was given to him much perfume, that he may give it to
the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar that is before the throne,
d.
Amplified Bible: And another angel came and stood over the altar. He had a
golden censer, and he was given very much incense (fragrant spices and gums
which exhale perfume when burned), that he might mingle it with the prayers of
all the people of God (the saints) upon the golden altar before the throne.
e.
Worrell Translation: And another angel came, and stood over the altar, having a
golden censer; and there was given to him
much incense, that he might add it to the prayers of all the saints upon
the golden altar which was before the throne.

sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often
used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and,

b.
another [243 * allos] [Strong: a primary word; "else," i.e. different

1). This
was to distinguish this angel from the seven angels mentioned in the previous
verse.
a).
Revelation 8:2 And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them
were given seven trumpets.
c. angel
[32 * aggelos] [Strong: from aggello (probably derived from 71; compare 34) (to

otherwise occur) to come or go (in a great variety of applications, literally
and figuratively):--accompany, appear, bring, come, enter, fall out, go, grow,

h. the
altar [2379 * thusiasterion] [Strong: from a derivative of 2378; a place of
sacrifice, i.e. an altar (special or genitive case, literal or
figurative):--altar.]
1). This
angel is ministering at the altar in heaven in the office of a priest. The fact
that some Bible teachers don’t see a problem with an angel doing the ministry
of a priest is beyond me. Because of this I personally believe this “angel” is
Christ Jesus operating in His High priest office.

1). This
individual is not an “angel” in the sense of a minister of God such as the
angels that announced Jesus birth (Luke 2:8-14), or his resurrection (Matthew
28:1-7). In fact he is not an angel at all. This indivdual is ministering in
the capacity of a priest in the Temple and this Temple is not on earth but in
heaven. He can be no other than Christ Jesus ministering in His capacity as our
High Priest. A little further down, more will be given on the priestly duties
of offering incense, but for now lets look at some verses that establish Christ
Jesus as our High Priest.
a).
Hebrews 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed
into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
4:15 For
we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our
infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin.
4:16 Let
us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy,
and find grace to help in time of need.
b).
Hebrews 8:1-3 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have
such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty
in the heavens;
8:2 A
minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched,
and not man.
8:3 For
every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of
necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.
a). Hebrews
9:11, 12 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a
greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not
of this building;
9:12 Neither
by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into
the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
2). The
altar referred to here is the altar of incense, but we must remember this altar
is in heaven. The type and foreshadow of this altar is mentioned in Hebrews.
a).
Hebrews 9:4 Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid
round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron’s
rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;
3). Its
construction and specific use on a daily basis is described in Exodus. Its use once
a year on the Day of Atonement is described in Leviticus.
a). Exodus
30:1-9 And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: of shittim wood shalt
thou make it.
30:2 A
cubit shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof; foursquare
shall it be: and two cubits shall be the height thereof: the horns thereof
shall be of the same.
30:3 And
thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, the top thereof, and the sides thereof
round about, and the horns thereof; and thou shalt make unto it a crown of gold
round about.
30:4 And
two golden rings shalt thou make to it under the crown of it, by the two
corners thereof, upon the two sides of it shalt thou make it; and they shall be
for places for the staves to bear it withal.
30:5 And
thou shalt make the staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold.
30:6 And
thou shalt put it before the vail that is by the ark of the testimony, before
the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with thee.
30:7 And
Aaron shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresseth the
lamps, he shall burn incense upon it.
30:8 And
when Aaron lighteth the lamps at even, he shall burn incense upon it, a
perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations.
30:9 Ye
shall offer no strange incense thereon, nor burnt sacrifice, nor meat offering;
neither shall ye pour drink offering thereon.
b). Leviticus
16:11-14 And Aaron shall bring the bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and shall make
an atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bullock of the
sin offering which is for
himself:
16:12 And
he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before
the LORD, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within
the vail:
16:13 And
he shall put the incense upon the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the
incense may cover the mercy seat thatis upon the testimony, that he
die not:
16:14 And
he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle itwith his
finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he
sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.
4). The
specific commandments regarding its function and use only by a priest bolsters
the teaching that the “angel” in heaven ministering in the capacity of a priest
is none other than Jesus our High Priest.
5).
Incense is a type of prayer.
a). Psalm
141:2 Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of
my hands as the evening sacrifice.
2.
“…that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar
which was before the throne.”
a. that

(through the demonstrative idea; compare 3588); in order that (denoting the
purpose or the result):--albeit, because, to the intent (that), lest, so as,

b. he
should offer it [1325 * didomi] [Strong: a prolonged form of a primary verb
(which is used as an alternative in most of the tenses); to give (used in a
very wide application, properly, or by implication, literally or figuratively;
greatly modified by the connection):--adventure, bestow, bring forth, commit,
deliver (up), give, grant, hinder, make, minister, number, offer, have power,

primary word; all, any, every, the whole:--all (manner of, means), alway(-s),
any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no(-thing), X
thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.]
e. saints
[40 * hagios] [Strong: from hagos (an awful thing) (compare 53, 2282); sacred
(physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially,
consecrated):--(most) holy (one, thing), saint.]
f. upon
[1909 * epi] [Strong: a primary preposition; properly, meaning superimposition
(of time, place, order, etc.), as a relation of distribution (with the genitive
case), i.e. over, upon, etc.; of rest (with the dative case) at, on, etc.; of
direction (with the accusative case) towards, upon, etc.:--about (the times),
above, after, against, among, as long as (touching), at, beside, X have charge
of, (be-, (where-))fore, in (a place, as much as, the time of, -to), (because)
of, (up-)on (behalf of), over, (by, for) the space of, through(-out), (un-)to(-ward),

k. the
throne [2362 * thronos] [Strong: from thrao (to sit); a stately seat
("throne"); by implication, power or (concretely) a potentate:--seat,

1). Again,
the duties mentioned in this verse refer exclusively to those of a priest. Jesus
is the High Priest of the New Covenant and prayer is to be petitioned to God
only in the name of Jesus. Everything we do as believers is to be done in the
name of Jesus. These truths bolster further that the individual standing at the
altar is none other than Jesus.
a).
Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am
I in the midst of them.
b). John
14:13, 14 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the
Father may be glorified in the Son.
14:14 If
ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
c).
Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the
Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
2). Jesus
alone is worthy to offer the prayers of the saints up to God our Father.
