Ephesians 6:15

Ephesians 6:15

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

a. NLT: For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.

b. NIV: And with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

c. YLT: And having the feet shod in the preparation of the good-news of the peace;

d. Amplified Bible Classic: And having shod your feet in preparation [to face the enemy with the firm-footed stability, the promptness, and the readiness produced by the good news] of the Gospel of peace.

e. Worrell Translation: And having shod your feet with the preparation of the Gospel of peace.

f. Wuest Translation: And having sandalled your feet with a firm foundation of the good news of peace.

1. “And your feet shod…”

a. And [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a
cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. your [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

c. foot [Strong: 4228 pous pooce a primary word; a "foot" (figuratively or literally):--foot(-stool).]
shod [5265 hupodeo hoop-od-eh'-o from 5259 and 1210; to bind under one's feet, i.e. put on shoes or sandals:--bind on, (be) shod.] [Thayer: to under-bind, to bind under one's self, bind on.]

1). Speaking of shoes or something to protect the feet. Paul is of course speaking metaphorically, though when Jesus sent out the 70 to evangelize he instructed his disciples to not take extra sandals.

a). Luke 10:4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.

2). Adam Clark’s Commentary: GREAVES or brazen boots, which covered the shin or front of the leg; a kind of sole was often used, which covered the sole, and laced about the instep, and prevented the foot from being wounded by rugged ways, thorns, stones, &c.

2. “…with the preparation of the gospel of peace.”

a. with [Strong: 1722 en en a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]

b. the preparation [2091 hetoimasia het-oy-mas-ee’-ah from 2090; preparation:--preparation.] [Thayer: the act of preparing, the condition of a person or thing so far forth as prepared, preparedness, readiness.] [Vine: “preparation;” it is found in Ephesians 6:15, of having the feet shod with the “preparation” of the Gospel of peace; it also has the meaning of firm footing (foundation), as in the Septuagint of Psalm 89:14 (RV, “foundation”); if that is the meaning in Ephesians 6:15, the Gospel itself is to be the firm footing of the believer, his walk being worthy of it and therefore a testimony in regard to it.]

1). [Septuagint] Psalm 89:14 Justice and judgment are the establishment of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.

2). [KJV] Psalm 89:14 Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.

3). In light of that thought the foundation or establishment allows a man to give the proper explanations for his faith.

a). Colossians 4:6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

b). 1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

c. of the [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

d. gospel [Strong: 2098 euaggelion yoo-ang-ghel'-ee-on from the same as 2097; a good message, i.e. the gospel:--gospel.]

e. of peace [Strong: 1515 eirene i-ray'-nay probably from a primary verb eiro (to join); peace (literally or figuratively); by implication, prosperity:--one, peace, quietness, rest, + set at one again.]

4). There are a couple verses in the Scripture that give an explanation of this verse, one in the Old Testament and one in the New Testament.

a). Isaiah 52:7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

b). Romans 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

5). The gospel of Christ Jesus is the good news, because of what he accomplished for us we have peace with God.

a). Romans 4:23-5:1 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
4:24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;

4:25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

b). Ephesians 2:14, 15 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

6). Because of what Christ Jesus accomplished our ministry of reconciliation is a ministry of peace.

a). 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
