2 Peter 1:2
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you
through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
1. “Grace and peace be multiplied unto
you…”
a.
grace [5485 * charis][Thayer: grace, that which affords joy, pleasure, delight,
sweetness, charm, loveliness: grace of speech, good will, loving-kindness,
favour, of the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon
souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian
faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian
virtues, what is due to grace, the spiritual condition of one governed by the
power of divine grace, the token or proof of grace, benefit, a gift of grace, benefit,
bounty, thanks, (for benefits, services, favours), recompense, reward.][Strong:
graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act (abstract or concrete; literal,
figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and
its reflection in the life; including gratitude):--acceptable, benefit, favour,
gift, grace(- ious), joy, liberality, pleasure, thank(-s, -worthy).]
1). In the context of these verses, the
grace spoken of in 2 Peter 1:2 & 3 is the provision for everything in the
New Covenant
b.
multiplied [4129 * plethyno][Thayer: to increase, to multiply, to be increased,
(be multiplied) multiply, to be increased, to multiply
1). The Covenant was designed so that
grace and peace would be multiplied to us, but as we shall see it does not
automatically happen. We have a part to play in that multiplication.
2. “…through the knowledge of God, and
of Jesus our Lord,”
a.
knowledge [1922 *epignosis][Zodhiates: It is more intensive that gnosis,
knowledge, because it expresses a more thorough participation in acquiring of
knowledge on the part of the learner. In the NT, it often refers to knowledge
which very powerfully influences the form of religious life, a knowledge laying
claim to personal involvement.]
b.
Revelation knowledge is imparted to our spirits by the Holy Spirit.
1). 1 Corinthians 2:6-10 Howbeit we speak
wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of
the princes of this world, that come to nought:
But we speak the wisdom of God in a
mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our
glory:
Which none of the princes of this world
knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen,
nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God
hath prepared for them that love him.
But God hath revealed them unto us by
his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
c.
This is clearly referring to revelation knowledge. There are two kinds of
knowledge. There is natural knowledge, that is the knowledge we gain through
the five physical senses. There is revelation knowledge, knowledge gained only
through a revelation of God’s Spirit to our human spirit. This is the knowledge
that imparts faith and grace and everything we need in the New Covenant. It is
not just having head knowledge about the Bible, head knowledge will not build
faith and impart grace. Revelation knowledge is a deeper knowledge given to our
spirits by the Holy Ghost.
1). Romans 16:25 Now to him that is of
power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus
Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since
the world began,
2).The level of knowledge of the gospel we
will be established in will be according to the revelation that we receive. It
is this knowledge that will build us up and give us the inheritance that God
wants us to have.
a). Acts 20:32 And now, brethren, I
commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you
up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
